Big Thursday Night for Underdogs on the Ice

NHL NIGHT IN REVIEW – January 26th, 2023

With a solid nine-game slate in the National Hockey League, NHL Thursday games analysis saw a couple of big underdogs cashing tickets for bettors. Let’s take a quick look at Thursday night’s NHL games scores in review.

Results: TB wins 3-2 in OT
Over/Under: 6 Under -120/BOS -110/TB -110

The Tampa Bay Lightning took down the Atlantic Division-leading Boston Bruins in overtime last night by a final of 3-2 in Overtime. Forward Brayden Point scored his 28th goal of the NHL season while adding a pair of assists on the night along with Nikita Kucherov, who now leads the National Hockey League with 50 assists on the year.

Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy made 37 saves on 39 shots faced for his 22nd victory of the season. with the loss coming past regulation, Boston has now earned at least one point in 21 of their last 23 games. Winger Brad Marchand scored his 16th goal of the year for the Bruins.

Results: CHI wins 5-1
Over/under: Over -110/CHI +330/CGY -400

Chicago Blackhawks goalie Jaxson Stauber made 34 saves on 35 shots faced for his second career victory as Chicago upsets Calgary Flames in a 5-1 blowout as +330 road underdogs. Stauber becomes the first Hawks goalie since Gilles Meloche to win his first two career starts in net. Winger Boris Katchouk scored his second goal of the year and added an assist on defenseman Connor Murphy’s empty-net goal late in the contest.

Chicago has now beat the Flames in both meetings this season. Calgary has now lost three of their last five games as they prepare for their next five games on the road that will run past the All-Star break.

Over bettors weren’t happy about the lack of scoring from Calgary, who are now 2-2-1 O/U in their last five games at the Calgary Saddledome.

Results: WAS wins 3-2 in Shootout
Over/Under: 6.5 Under -115/PIT +110/WAS -130

Superstar Alex Ovechkin scored his 32nd goal of the season and 812th goal of his career as the Washington Capitals beat their hated rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 3-2 shootout decision. The victory snapped a two-game skid for the Caps, who now lead over Pittsburgh by one point in the Metropolitan Division NHL Eastern Conference Standings.

Goaltender Darcy Kuemper made 35 saves on 37 shots faced for his 15th victory of the year. Forward Bryan Rust scored his 11th goal of the season for Pittsburgh, who have gone past regulation in five of their last six contests.

The Penguins have now lost nine of their last ten games when lined as an Underdog, and have dropped three of the last four meetings with Washington.

Results: BUF wins 3-2
Over/Under: 6.5 Under +100 / BUF +160/WIN -185

Forward Tage Thompson continues his scoring prowess, netting his 34th goal of the year and adding an assist as the Buffalo Sabres cash as +160 road underdogs over the Winnipeg Jets by a score of 3-2. Goalie Eric Comrie made just 19 saves over 21 shots faced, which was enough for the backup to earn his first career win over his old club.

His counterpart, Connor Hellebuyck was solid, making 33 saves on 36 shots faced in the losing effort. The Sabres have now won five games in a row and four of their last five games when lined as an Underdog. Winnipeg has now dropped four of their last six games overall.


Other Notes Around The League

    • Tempers were hot early as three fights opened up the contest between the Minnesota Wild and the Philadelphia Flyers. Forward Matt Boldy scored two goals and an assist as the Wild beat the Flyers in overtime 3-2. Mats Zuccarello scored the game-winner midway through the extra session to snap a three-game losing streak for the Wild as large home favorites. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury earned his 32nd career victory against the Flyers, making 28 saves over 30 shots faced.

 

    • Nick Schmaltz scored the first Hat Trick of his career and Karel Vejmelka posted a 33-save shutout as the Arizona Coyotes beat the St. Louis Blues 5-0 as short home underdogs. The Blues have now dropped three straight games and lost forward Robert Thomas with an upper body injury he suffered in the second period.

 

    • Forwards Matt Duchene and Filip Forsberg each scored a goal as the Nashville Predators take down the New Jersey Devils 6-4 as home underdogs. All-Star goalie Juuse Saros made 35 saves on 39 shots faced for his 19th victory on the season. Devils forward Jack Hughes scored his 31st goal of the year as MacKenzie Blackwood made 35 saves in the losing effort. The regulation loss snapped an eight-game point streak for New Jersey

 

    • The Anaheim Ducks pick up their third win in the last four games, upsetting the Colorado Avalanche on the road 5-3 as +335 underdogs. Goaltender John Gibson made 41 saves on 44 shots faced for the win while forward Frank Vatrano scored a Hat Trick, the third of his career. Adam Henrique and Mason McTavish each scored for Anaheim as well. The loss snapped a six-game win streak for Colorado.
