2023 ATP Australian Open Betting Preview

Djokovic, The Player to Beat

Novak Djokovic tops the Australian Open Men’s Betting Odds board as the player to beat, and after missing out on last year’s tournament, he is set for a Melbourne comeback with a vengeance in 2023.

Djokovic’s favorable men’s tennis odds are underscored by his impressive finish to the 2022 season, winning three of five titles down the stretch, including a record-tying sixth ATP World Tour finals.

Djokovic won’t have it easy. The men’s field that is littered with legitimate contenders and potential stumbling blocks.

‘Alcaraz will be looking to make it back-to-back Grand Slam titles, while Medvedev will be keen to reach back-to-back Aussie Open finals after finishing runner-up in 2022.’

World No. 1 and reigning US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz is amongst the top betting favorites according to the Australian Betting Odds market, along with 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev. Alcaraz will be looking to make it back-to-back Grand Slam titles, while Medvedev will be keen to reach back-to-back Aussie Open finals after finishing runner-up in 2022.

Then, there is Djokovic’s nemesis and the reigning Aussie Open champion Rafael Nadal rounding out the betting at the top. Nadal will be gunning for his third Aussie Open title and 23rd career Grand Slam title Down Under.

Read on as we dive into the current Australian Open Men’s Betting Odds and highlight some of the top contenders, NexGen stars and long shots that could impact how the tournament unfolds.

The Contenders

Novak Djokovic (Even) – The Serbian picked up his 21st Grand Slam title at the Wimbledon Championships in 2022, closing the gap on Rafael Nadal (22) to one in the record books.

The Australian Open is Djokovic’s most successful major, where he has won a record nine titles. Thus, it’s not surprising at all that he is the top favorite on the latest Australian Open Men’s Betting Odds board. He will be gunning for a career tenth Australian Open title in Melbourne when the tournament gets underway in a fortnight.

Carlos Alcaraz (+500) – Teen phenom Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest World No. 1 player following his maiden Grand Slam victory at the 2022 US Open. Alcaraz beat Norway’s Casper Ruud in four sets to lift the title.

The 19-year-old is the second-best bet to win the Australian Open after Djokovic, but at more than five times the odds. Alcaraz wasn’t able to carry the momentum through to the 2022 finish line. He struggled with various injuries and skipped the ATP World Tour Finals in Turin.

Daniil Medvedev +650 – Daniil Medvedev started 2022 strong, and after Djokovic was ignominiously deported from the country, the Russian was the oddsmakers’ favorite to win the title. He came close to fulfilling that promise as well, going up two sets on Nadal in the final before the Spanish veteran turned the tables on him in epic fashion to win in five sets.

After that heartbreaking loss, Medvedev’s season was a bit up and down and his rankings oscillated as a result, reaching a high of World No. 1 before dropping to World No. 7. Injuries seemed to catch up to Medvedev in the later months of the season.

Nick Kyrgios (+900) – Australia’s Nick Kyrgios reached a career milestone in 2022 when he booked his first-ever passage into a Grand Slam final. Although he was unable to go one better, losing to Djokovic in four sets at the All England Club, he’s caught the imagination of tennis betting fans the world over. Indeed, he’s among the Top 5 favorites to win the Australian Open in 2023.

Rafael Nadal (+1000) – It seems somewhat surprising to see Nadal priced as the +1000 bet to win the Australian Open when he’s the defending champion and current World No. 2 player. The main case against the Spaniard is his questionable form after suffering a slew of injuries down the stretch.

The Middleweights

Jannik Sinner (+1500) – The Italian NextGen star is one to watch in 2023. He was one of few players that gave Djokovic a run for his money at the Wimbledon Championships, and he played one of the best tennis matches of the year against Carlos Alcaraz in the R16, taking the Spaniard to five sets. Everything about the 21-year-old Italian’s game suggests he’s a future champion on tennis’ biggest stages. At +1500 to win the 2023 Australian Open, he’s one of the best value bets among the middleweights to win the title.

Stefanos Tsitsipas (+1500) – The Greek No. 1 is a consistent top performer and a player that regularly makes it deep in a tournament. Tsitsipas is still searching for his first major breakthrough since reaching his first-ever Grand Slam final at the 2021 French Open. He’s a player that many expect will eventually claim one of the game’s biggest prizes, though his chances are considerably better on clay than they are on hard courts.

Casper Ruud +1800 – After Nadal, Djokovic and Alcaraz, Ruud was the most successful ATP player at the majors in 2022. The Norwegian reached two Grand Slam finals at the French Open and the US Open, and he carried that momentum into the ATP World Tour Finals, finishing runner-up to Djokovic.

‘Aliassime is improving with each passing season, establishing himself as a regular at the top of the game.’

Felix Auger-Aliassime (+1800) – The Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime is improving with each passing season, establishing himself as a regular at the top of the game. Going into 2023, the onus will be on ‘major’ success. To date, his best performance is a semifinal at the 2021 US Open. Last year, his best result was a quarterfinal at the Australian Open.

Holger Rune +2000 – Danish teenager Holger Rune is one of the NextGen stars to pay particular close attention to in 2023. The 18-year-old finished the 2022 season on a tear, winning a slew of indoor hard court titles, including the Paris Masters where he beat Djokovic in the final no less.

The Longshots

Cameron Norrie (+4000) – By the tennis odds, Norrie is among the tournament’s longshots, despite being a Top 20 player in the game. The Brit took advantage of a somewhat watered down draw at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, reaching his first-ever Grand Slam semifinal. Norrie’s best result at the Australian Open is a R32 appearance in 2021.

Matteo Berrettini (+5000) – Italy’s Matteo Berrettini was among the top contenders going into 2022 before injuries and  covid-19 derailed his season.

Alex De Minaur (+5000) – Australian hopeful Alex De Minaur is another top player that registers as a longshot at the Grand Slam level. Twice he’s reached the fourth round of a major, the 2022 Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Francis Tiafoe (+5000) – American Francis Tiafoe reached his first-ever major semifinal at the US Open last year, beating an injured Rafael Nadal along the way. Tiafoe’s best result in Melbourne to date is a quarterfinal appearance at the 2019 Australian Open.
