Zverev Among the Top Contenders in Acapulco ATP Event

Former Champs Among Those Featured in ATP Abierto Mexicano Telcel Odds

Multiple Americans Will Be Seeded in ATP 500 Stop in Acapulco

There are no lack of top contenders to keep an eye on when it comes to the ATP Abierto Mexicano Telcel odds. Nine of the top 15 ranked players in the world are on the entry list for the hard-court tournament.

Defending champion Alex de Minaur returns as he looks to become the first player to win back-to-back ATP titles in Acapulco since David Ferrer won three titles in a row from 2010-12.

Uncover Exclusive Picks & Predictions From Our Experts.

When looking at the tennis futures odds, Alexander Zverev is priced at +2200 to reach at least two Grand Slam singles finals in 2024. Holger Rune isn’t far behind at +2800.

After this tournament is over, the top players will head to the United States for back-to-back ATP 1000 tennis tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami before the clay-court season gets rolling leading into the French Open.

The tournament begins on Monday. Keep on reading for more on the ATP tour top in Acapulco.

Eyeing Another Mexican Open Title

Alex de Minaur looks to join some select company by winning back-to-back titles in Acapulco even if the ATP Abierto Mexicano Telcel Odds might be favoring some of the players ahead of him in the seedings.

If de Minaur wins again, he would join Thomas Muster, Nicolas Almagro, and Ferrer as the only repeat champion.
He is not the only former champ in the field.

Alexander Zverev won the tournament in 2021. His bid to repeat ended when he was defaulted from the tournament for unsportsmanlike conduct in doubles.

In the latest ATP rankings, Zverev remained at No. 6 while de Minaur jumped up from 11th to ninth after advancing to the Rotterdam final.

A Look At the U.S. Hopes

No American has won the ATP title in Acapulco since Sam Querrey in 2017. However, Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul were finalists in 2020 and 2023.

Fritz and Paul are joined by Frances Tiafoe, Ben Shelton, and Christopher Eubanks to give the field a large group of U.S.-born players capable of making a run in this tournament when it comes to the tennis picks. McKenzie McDonald was also on the entry list but withdrew from the field.

There isn’t much separating Fritz, who is ranked 10th in the ATP rankings, from Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, and Grigor Dimitrov so this is a key stretch for Fritz to give the tour one American in the top 10.

Fritz recently won the title in Delray Beach without dropping a set. He faced Paul in the title match after Paul posted a routine win over Tiafoe in the semifinals.

Paul was looking for back-to-back titles after winning it all in Dallas.

It hasn’t been a strong start in 2024 for Tiafoe with a 5-4 record and three losses to players outside the top 50.

American Nick Chappell played his way into the main draw by taking out fellow American Steve Johnson in three sets and then rolling past Rubin Stratham in the qualifying draw. Brandon Holt fell to top-seeded Taro Daniel in the final round of qualifying.

Breaking Down Other Top Contenders

There are other players capable of lifting the championship trophy in Acapulco when looking at the ATP Abierto Mexicano Telcel odds.

Holger Rune had a disappointing showing at the Australian Open and then he had to retire in his next event in Montpellier in the semifinals.

Stefanos Tsitsipas just fell out of the top 10 in the ATP rankings but he is back in action at the Mifel Tennis Open, also in Mexico. Tsitsipas, Ruud, and Zverev all reached the quarterfinals.

Grigor Dimitrov, reached the Marseille final and then reached the semifinals at Rotterdam, pulled out of the tournament.

Cameron Norrie lost his first tennis match after the Australian Open to No. 106 Federico Coria but he did reach the 2022 final in Acapulco.

A Quick Look Back

With defending champion Rafael Nadal unable to play in the 2023 Mexican Open, it was going to be another year without a repeat champion.

Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz was a late withdrawal. That opened things up for the nine Americans in the top half of the draw.

All four quarterfinalists in that portion of the bracket were from the U.S. with Fritz topping Tiafoe and Tommy Paul eliminating McDonald.

Two tiebreakers were needed in the three sets before Paul punched his ticket into the final.

When looking at the bottom portion of the draw, No. 5 seed Norrie also withdrew. With Ruud falling in the second round, just two seeds remained in the quarterfinals. No. 8 seed de Minaur needed three sets to eliminate No. 4 seed Rune in the semifinals.
