SS Lazio Stats & History

Lazio was founded in Rome in 1900 and was initially amateur until 1912. In the early years, Lazio were national finalists three times but a league title eluded them.

The Biancocelesti were one of the original Serie A clubs when it was first organized in 1929. Lazio finished second place in Serie A in 1937, led by legendary striker Silvio Piola. Piola is the all-time goal scoring leader in Italian First Division history, and he also played for Pro Vercelli, Juventus, and Novara. He led in one of the main Lazio team stats categories, Serie A goals, until he was caught by Ciro Immobile.

Lazio won their first major trophy in 1958 with their Serie A triumph. They were briefly relegated from Serie A in 1961, 1967 and 1971. Upon promotion in 1972, Lazio became surprise title contenders and lost out on the Scudetto on the final day. The next season, Lazio sealed their first-ever Serie A title.

SS Lazio Team Records

Betting scandals hampered Lazio throughout the 80s, which doomed them to Serie B on multiple occasions. The Biancocelesti were resurgent in the 90s, knocking on the doorstep of another Scudetto. They finished second in 1995 and 1998, and third in 1996. In 1998, Lazio managed to win the Coppa Italia for the second time, and they also won the 1999 European Cup Winners’ Cup.

Perhaps one of the most notable SS Lazio stats is their league and Coppa Italia double in 2000. Lazio went on to win the Coppa Italia twice more in the 2000s and two more times in the 2010s. Their most recent major trophy was their 2019 Coppa Italia win over Atalanta.

In 2020-21, Lazio played in the Champions League for the first time since 2007-08. As a member of Lazio, striker Ciro Immobile has won the Capocannoniere, or Golden Boot, three times. In March 2022, he broke Piola’s Lazio record of 143 top flight goals. Immobile is Lazio’s all-time leading scorer in all competitions.

Serie A betting advice in 2022-23 implies that Lazio are longshots to win the title. Their preseason +5000 Serie A odds are seventh-best in the league.
