RCD Mallorca Stats & History

RCD Mallorca was founded in 1916 as Alfonso XIII Foot-Ball Club. They played in the 1917 Catalan second-tier championship and defeated Football Club Palafrugell 3-1 to win the title. In the 1949-50 season, Mallorca changed their name to the current Real Club Deportivo Mallorca.

The 1959-60 team stands out in the Mallorca stats as being the first one to win promotion to La Liga. In their first season in the top flight, Mallorca finished ninth of 16 teams, however, they moved back and forth between the first and second divisions in the 1960s. Mallorca gained promotion in both 1966 and 1969 but they had short stays in La Liga on both occasions.

After a solid decade, Mallorca went into crisis mode. In 1974-75, they were playing all the way down in the fifth tier of Spanish soccer. The club was on the brink of extinction in 1977 as the players weren’t paid their salaries. They responded by locking themselves in the locker room in protest. Finally, a group from Palma saved the club and ushered them into less volatile times.
