LSU Women’s Basketball Coach Inks Historic $32 Million Deal
Kim Mulkey Deal Strikes Gold

Kim Mulkey, LSU’s women’s basketball coach, is about to make history. Fresh off a national championship win, she’s set to become the highest-paid coach in women’s basketball.
Mulkey and LSU have agreed to a jaw-dropping 10-year, $32 million contract extension, surpassing all previous records in women’s basketball coaching. This groundbreaking Kim Mulkey deal is currently pending approval from the LSU Board of Supervisors, with the decisive meeting scheduled for Friday.
Shattering the Glass Ceiling
Previously, the title of the highest-paid women’s basketball coach belonged to UConn’s Geno Auriemma at $2.9 million per year, followed closely by South Carolina’s Dawn Staley at $2.7 million. Even Becky Hammon, the highest-paid coach in the WNBA, earned $1 million annually.
The new Kim Mulkey deal is set to start at $2.75 million, gradually increasing to an astounding $3.65 million by 2033. This is a significant leap from her previous average annual earnings of $2.5 million, which were slated to continue through 2029.
Mulkey’s Triumph at LSU in Just Two Seasons
Kim Mulkey’s remarkable journey at LSU has been nothing short of spectacular. In just two seasons, she led the Bayou Bengals to an unexpected national championship victory, boosting their WNBA standings, grabbing top WNBA odds, and defying expectations as they emerged victorious in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. It’s worth noting that LSU had a lackluster 9-13 record in the year prior to Mulkey’s arrival, WNBA team stats that were totally lacking.
Her success was built on a roster bolstered by a host of transfers with top-notch WNBA player stats, with standout players like Angel Reese leading the way. Mulkey’s recruiting prowess continues to attract top talent, and, with a championship already in her pocket plus a program on the rise, it’s clear why LSU is willing to invest in Mulkey’s coaching prowess.
This historic Kim Mulkey deal entails not only her incredible coaching abilities but also the growing recognition and support for women’s basketball at the highest level.
