Liberty Widely Favored in a Game With Plenty of Stakes

With just a week left in the WNBA regular season, New York is neck-and-neck with Las Vegas for the top spot in the league. And the Sparks vs Liberty odds expect NY to make it more interesting by blowing out the undermanned visitors as 12.5-point favorites. The Sparks are still fighting for a playoff spot so they could make a game of this even if they are 1-4 against the spread (ATS) in their last five games.

Sparks Face Uphill Battle Without Stars

The Sparks battled hard amidst an injury-plagued season. And what is their reward? Playing the WNBA’s second-best team (arguably the best) to save their shot at the WNBA playoffs. Life’s not fair. And what’s worse is that the Sparks will need to do it without Nneka Ogwumike, the team’s best player.

“She’s played through some discomfort recently,” Sparks head coach Curt Miller said of Ogwumike on Sunday prior to the Mystics game. “We felt it was prudent that she needed some more rest tonight. We’ll see how she [does] over the next couple of days and how she is on this road trip.”

The Sparks upset the Mystics in that game. But right after, guard Karlie Samuelson joined Ogwumike on the injury list, and Los Angeles got blown out by Connecticut. Both Ogwumike and Samuelson are the team’s biggest impact players. They were the top two on the team in terms of winning shares per 48 minutes.

Heading to New York will prove more daunting without them, especially with the Sparks’ 6-12 road record. Still, Los Angeles backers may benefit from this team’s undying spirit. It’s why the Sparks have covered five of its last seven road games and are also 5-1 ATS when facing New York.

It’s likely why folks have bet for Los Angeles on the Sparks vs Liberty odds. This team opened with a 13.5-point spread, which is now down to 12.5 points. And the total of 159.5, which is down from 160.5, means the public also feels it will be a slow-paced and gritty game. That’s a trademark of the Sparks this year.

Liberty Ready To Open a New York-Sized Whooping

As for the Liberty, New York will make for an easy parlay piece during this sports-stacked week. But can this team cover the sizable Sparks vs Liberty odds? New York has been the best WNBA team since August, which is the last time it faced Los Angeles.

The Liberty are 13-1 in this span and their only loss came against the Aces, whom they also beat three times. New York ranks first in the WNBA in net rating with a whopping 18.4, which is 11 more than Las Vegas in second. And now, New York gets a chance to inch closer to the top of the WNBA standings by destroying Los Angeles.

The Liberty failed to cover both spreads against the Sparks this year (both at 8.5 points). But they are facing them when the Sparks are most vulnerable and the Liberty are at their best. New York is 3-0 ATS when facing a double-digit spread since August 1.

Most notably, New York has no injuries. This may be the team’s biggest advantage this season as nearly every WNBA team, including the Aces, has a key player or two sitting on the sidelines.

Given all of New York’s advantages, we won’t fault anyone for auto-betting the team. They have been nigh-unstoppable in their recent WNBA games. And as the playoffs approach, the Liberty will continue to kick it in high gear.
