And Another One: Basketball Coach Caught Betting Nearly $100 Grand

NCAA Charges Basketball Coach Who Bet Across Two Years

Women’s Basketball Coach Caught Betting

Sewanee: The University of the South has been tied to several controversies regarding its history. It’s again making unflattering news though for something less sinister than sexual harassment and racism: sports betting. Specifically, the NCAA charges women’s basketball coach Brody Curry for placing $93,000 in wagers from 2021 to 2023.

Now You Sewanee, Now You Don’t: Coach Tried To Supplement Salary

The NCAA charged basketball coach Brody Curry for laying nearly $100K in sports wagers, blatantly disregarding NCAA rules. The Tennessee Sports Wagering Advisory Council informed the school about Curry, the women’s program’s head coach since the 2022-23 season.

Per reports, he wagered 407 times on college sports with 20 being in women’s basketball games though no bets were on his team.

“Regardless of the evolving views and prevalence of sports wagering, such activities remain against NCAA rules,” the NCAA committee wrote in its decision. “Given the prevalence of sports wagering activities on college campuses, it is arguably even more important that those closest to student-athletes refrain from such behaviors to protect student-athletes.”

The committee went on to prescribe a self-imposed $1,500 fine by the school and one year of probation. In addition, the school will also be required to have one staff member of its athletic department attend the 2025 and 2025 NCAA Regional Rules Seminars.

As for Curry, he will have a two-year show-cause order in which he needs to be provided with individual monthly rules education. When he returns to coaching, he will be suspended for the first five regular-season games. He knows how to read the betting lines but he’ll be reminded of the anti-sports betting legislation for people in his field.

Curry also voluntarily resigned from his position and moved to the same position at the Webb School in Tennessee.

“This new chapter in his life represents a wonderful opportunity for his growing family. He’ll be greatly missed by his students, colleagues, and campus friends, but will always be a Sewanee Tiger with roots planted on the plateau.”

NCAA vs Sports Betting, an Ongoing Battle

The NCAA said in its statement: that online betting is prevalent and more athletes, coaches, and sports personnel will take part in it. It’s only a matter of how many get caught and how the NCAA adjusts to it. Curry is but one figure in a growing trend as we saw several athletes and coaches get hooked over the past years.

However, the NCAA charged the basketball coach, but it also lightened up on penalties for athletes who get caught. Since 2018, there have been 175 sports-betting violations (with 17 active at the time of the report in July 2023).
