FanDuel Becomes DC Mobile Sports Betting Operator
Company Will Replace GambetDC in Spring

The Washington D.C. Office of Lottery and Gaming (OLG) announced FanDuel was going to become the district’s primary online sportsbook. FanDuel is expected to take over for GambetDC during the spring.
Intralot has been running sports betting in Washington D.C. for the past five years under the GamebetDC banner, but GamebetDC’s ap has not received very good reviews.
Intralot failed to bring in more revenue than the district could have made by opening up the marketplace to more sportsbook operators, as it claimed. With Intralot’s five-year contract with Washington D.C. set to expire in July 2024, it made sense to do something.
That something was to ensure FanDuel becomes DC mobile sports betting operator. While Intralot is still in charge of online sports betting in Washington D.C., it has subcontracted out to FanDuel, so that Washington D.C. residents have access to FanDuel.
“FanDuel’s industry-leading offering will ensure that the District maximizes revenue under its existing contracts this year while delivering a best-in-class experience for 18+ residents,” said Executive Director of OLG Frank Suarez in a press release.
The District was more than happy to ensure FanDuel becomes DC mobile sports betting operator, as it will pay immediate dividends. Intralot will pay Washington D.C. $5 million within the current fiscal year. That amount guarantees the District will see an increase in revenue.
Intralot will also assume the costs of OLG’s operating costs associated with sports betting. That amount is close to $3 million annually. FanDuel has also guaranteed the District $10 million per year annually over the next four years.
Big Change for Washington D.C. Residents
The switch from GambetDC to FanDuel is a big one for customers. There were plenty of knocks against GambetDC, ranging from the app to the odds and poor spread betting choices. Many of those problems are expected to be eliminated when the FanDuel app goes live.
GambetDC’s kiosks will be gradually replaced by FanDuel kiosks for those who prefer in-person betting over online betting.
The OLG press release also stated having FanDuel as the online sportsbook will make it easier for residents and those who live in nearby states to wager on sports.
“FanDuel’s strong national presence and 50 percent market share in neighboring states will allow Washington D.C.’s 20 million annual visitors to engage in legalized sports wagering and will also regain the participation of residents who currently engage in sports betting in neighboring states,” the release said.
The OLG press release also stated that when FanDuel becomes DC mobile sports betting operator the District’s problem gambling matters will receive more attention.
“OLG will maintain its strong commitment to responsible gaming oversight,” its statement said. “All users will now have access to FanDuel’s industry-leading problem gambling prevention, education, and advocacy resources. The FanDuel platform offers built-in app safeguards, allowing customers to set deposits, wagers, and time limits for their play.”
There are other sportsbooks in the District that operate retail betting outlets. Most states report seeing upwards of 85% of handle coming from online gambling.
