Australian Stands Out in Tszyu vs Ocampo Betting Preview

WBO Interim Welterweight Title

Our Tszyu vs Ocampo betting preview looks at the chances of Australian superstar Tim Tszyu remaining undefeated.

The 28-year-old takes on Carlos Ocampo for the WBO interim welterweight title in Gold Coast on Sunday, which highlights boxing this weekend.

Despite being ranked sixth in the world, we believe Tszyu is good enough to beat the world’s best, so it makes for an intriguing fight for the -800 favorite.

Tszyu Eyes Statement Fight

Say what you want about the level of opposition on Sunday, but Tszyu deserves a chance at one of the top guys in the division.

He’s not only the son of a former champion, but he’s 22-0, and ready to show the world just how good he is.

The Australian comes off a knockout win over Tony Harrison, which earned him the right to contest the WBO Interim Welterweight title fight against Mexico’s best welterweight.

However, we see bigger fights in his future, which is why those who bet on boxing get -800 for Tszyu to win. We thought he would have been around -1200, but bookmakers are giving Ocampo plenty of respect, mostly due to his experience.

Tszyu was bitten by a dog two weeks ago, which put this fight in jeopardy. However, according to his promoter, he’s fine and ready to go.

“Like everyone, I was shocked and worried when I first heard the news,” the No Limit CEO and Tszyu’s promoter, George Rose, said. “It’s certainly not the ideal preparation anytime a fighter ends up in hospital a few weeks out from a world title fight, but the best news right now is that Tim is doing OK.”

The Tszyu vs Ocampo betting preview expects Tszyu to be too good for Ocampo, who has 35 wins on his record, but many of those came against inferior opponents.

This is a good stepping stone for the Australian champion, who has a wealth of knowledge in his camp, and he could justify the short boxing odds with bookmakers.

Ocampo Not Well-Credentialed

We question the credentials of Ocampo, who we thought would be a +1600 chance at the sportsbook.

The 35-2 Mexican has fought only one name of the note, which resulted in a loss to Sebastian Fundora. He bounced back with a knockout win, but that came against a one-star fighter, so it’s not good form.

We believe +500 is far too short for Ocampo, and our Tszyu vs Ocampo betting preview highlights the chinks in his armor.

His best fight came against Mikael Zewski in 2022 when winning with a ninth-round TKO, but he needs to raise a few levels on that performance.

The 27-year-old, like many Mexicans, has had a busy career. He’s one of the more experienced fighters at his age in the business, but it doesn’t mean much when the majority of those came against no-name countrymen.

“And us Mexicans are different. We are distinguished fighters,” Ocampo said. “Here boxers fight to win their breakfast tomorrow — the rest of the world doesn’t understand that.”

While Tszyu might have come from boxing royalty, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve to win. Ocampo had his chance to rise the ranks but lost to Fundora, and we believe he’s lucky to get this chance for the interim title.

We expect money to come for Tszyu, which could see Ocampo’s odds drift to around +650 on fight night.
