Last season, these teams split their two meetings on the Bundesliga schedule. Bayern Munich defeated Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 at home, which was Gerry Seoane’s last Bundesliga match in charge for Leverkusen. Bayern have topped the Bundesliga standings 11 years in a row and it’ll be a disappointment if Thomas Tuchel’s side don’t make it 12. Harry Kane has been a standout since joining from Tottenham and has scored three goals in three Bundesliga games. They followed that up with a 3-0 win at Borussia Monchengladbach and a 5-1 win vs. Darmstadt. New striker Victor Boniface, who Leverkusen signed from Union Saint-Gilloise, has been excellent so far.
The Nigeria international has scored four goals and added two assists so far. Boniface has scored twice in each of his last two matches as well. Meanwhile, right wingback Jeremie Frimpong is a joint-leader in the Bundesliga stats, with three assists. So far, Leverkusen have averaged over 10 shots on target per game and play an attractive style that leads to plenty of opportunities.
Xabi Alonso has done a great job with this Bayer Leverkusen side and he’s one of world football’s most in-demand managers. With the Real Madrid job opening up next Summer, this could be Bayer Leverkusen’s best chance to win the Bundesliga title in quite some time. While Boniface has been performing admirably, it’ll be a big boost when fellow striker Patrik Schick is healthy. Defender Piero Hincapie is also on the sidelines for the time being.
