Monchengladbach Open up Season with Eight-Goal Draw
Big Things Expected of Bayer Leverkusen
By all accounts, Bayer Leverkusen made some shrewd acquisitions in the transfer market this Summer. In their season opener, four new arrivals started as Leverkusen defeated RB Leipzig. Bayer Leverkusen could be headed for big things this season, but Borussia Monchengladbach stand in their way on Saturday. Gladbach played to a wild 4-4 draw vs Augsburg, and you never know what you’re going to get with them. In what promises to be an entertaining match, let’s preview the Borussia Monchengladbach vs Leverkusen odds.
Monchengladbach vs Leverkusen Head-to-Head
Bayer Leverkusen have gotten the better of Borussia Monchengladbach in recent seasons. The last meeting on the Bundesliga schedule finished in a 2-2 draw, but Leverkusen won the previous seven meetings before that. Amine Adli scored in both fixtures for Bayer Leverkusen last season. Notably, Leverkusen have won in each of their previous five trips to Borussia-Park, in all competitions.
Gladbach Blow Lead and Settle For Point
Borussia Monchengladbach’s opening match of the Bundesliga season was a wild ride, to say the least. They went on the road to Augsburg, where they had a three-game losing streak. Ko Itakura opened up the scoring with his first Bundesliga goal for Gladbach.
Tomas Cvancara scored a Bundesliga debut goal and doubled their lead in the 27th minute. Elvis Rexhbecaj got a goal back for Augsburg just two minutes later, but Nathan Ngoumou restored Gladbach’s two-goal lead on a breakaway goal.
The first-half scoring wasn’t over yet, as Augsburg added two more goals before the half to level proceedings. Ruben Vargas gave Augsburg the lead with 15 minutes to play, but Gladbach won a penalty right at the death. Cvancara converted the penalty to level the match at 4-4.
The Czech forward had an excellent Bundesliga debut after switching from Sparta Prague. However, Borussia Monchengladbach’s play over the last few seasons has been startlingly inconsistent, and this match was a microcosm of that trend. Gladbach did destroy Bersenbruck 7-0 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal, though, and Cvancara also scored twice in that match.
He looks like a great addition to Gladbach’s forward line, especially after Jonas Hofmann departed for Bayer Leverkusen. New Borussia Monchengladbach coach Gerry Seoane used to be Bayer Leverkusen’s coach until last October, which makes this match a bit of a personal affair. Right now, the Monchengladbach vs Leverkusen odds price the hosts as underdogs, though.
Seaone has been financially backed this offseason, as Gladbach have a bunch of new signings. Summer arrivals Cvancara, Franck Honorat, Max Wober and Julian Weigl all started the first match of the season.
Frimpong Shines for Bayer Leverkusen
Like Borussia Monchengladbach, Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen made a bunch of new signings. Granit Xhaka, Alex Grimaldo, Jonas Hofmann and Victor Boniface all started in their season opener vs RB Leipzig.
Leverkusen managed a 3-2 win in front of their home fans as Jeremie Frimpong scored their first goal of the season. He also managed an assist and put in a man of the match performance vs the DFL-Supercup winners.
Florian Wirtz, who missed much of 2022 with an ACL injury, also got on the scoresheet for Leverkusen. On his Bundesliga debut, former Union Saint-Gilloise striker Victor Boniface dished out a crucial assist. Expectations are relatively high for Leverkusen in Xabi Alonso’s first full season at the helm. They’ll juggle the Europa League with competing in the Bundesliga this season.
In 2022-23, Bayer Leverkusen started quite slowly, but results drastically improved once Alonso took over. They reached the Europa League semifinals and finished sixth in the Bundesliga standings.
However, they didn’t have a 10-goal scorer in the Bundesliga last season, and they’ll hope Boniface helps with that. Patrik Schick has also proven to be prolific when he’s healthy but is out due to injury. Amine Adli, who has a good goalscoring record vs Gladbach, is suspended.
