Bundesliga – FC Koln vs Borussia Dortmund Game Info:

  • Date & Time:
  • TV: ESPN+

Head-to-Head

FC Koln have struggled to beat Borussia Dortmund at the RheinEnergie Stadion. Koln’s last win over Dortmund in Cologne was in 2015. Last season’s fixture finished in a 1-1 draw but Dortmund managed a 2-0 win at home. Two of the last three meetings have finished in draws, along with four of the last ten. Usually, FC Koln vs Borussia Dortmund betting odds favor BVB. That’s because Koln have won just one of the last twelve matches between the sides.

Don’t Count Koln Out

  • Bundesliga Record: 2-1-4, 10 pts, 9th
  • Bundesliga Form: D,L,W,D,D
  • Injuries and Suspensions: D Julian Chabot (Day-to-Day), M Mathias Olesen (Day-to-Day), F Mark Uth (Day-to-Day), F Sebastian Andersson (Out)

Despite only winning two of their first seven matches, FC Koln have started the season decently. They’ve only lost to the league’s first place team, Union Berlin, and have a tidy +3 goal difference. Plus, they’re currently in first place in Group D of the UEFA Europa Conference League. Austrian playmaker Florian Kainz has five goal contributions, which is the most on the team by far.

Just two seasons ago, Koln finished in 16th place and played in the relegation playoff. After a seventh place finish last season, they’ve got their sights set on European competition again. Manager Steffen Baumgart has been at the center of Koln’s transformation. They’ve also had one of the league’s better defenses this season.

Despite three draws in their last five matches, the Billy Goats have made comebacks an art. They’ve already taken six points from losing positions this season. As a result, they’ve been great for live ATS Bundesliga betting thus far. One thing that Koln perhaps lack is a prolific striker. Anthony Modeste scored 20 goals in the Bundesliga last season but he’ll return to the RheinEnergie Stadion as a member of Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Injury Crisis For Borussia Dortmund

    • Bundesliga Record: 5-2, 15 pts, 2nd
    • Bundesliga Form: W,L,W,W,L
    • Injuries and Suspensions: GK Gregor Kobel (Day-to-Day), D Raphael Guerreiro (Day-to-Day), D Mateu Morey (Out), M Salih Ozcan (Day-to-Day), M Julian Brandt (Day-to-Day), M Mahmoud Dahoud (Out), M Marco Reus (Out), F Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (Out), F Sebastien Haller (Out)

Borussia Dortmund’s title challenge last season was severely impacted by injuries. This season is unfortunately more of the same. No fewer than nine players are currently carrying injuries, some of them long term. A handful of them are also to key players. Sebastien Haller was signed from Ajax to soften the blow of losing Erling Haaland but is out long-term with testicular cancer. Captain and talisman Marco Reus has an ankle injury but thankfully it’s not too serious.

Phenom Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Mo Dahoud are both out with shoulder injuries as well. Yet with all of those injuries, Dortmund nearly got a result vs Manchester City in the Champions League a few weeks back. The Borussia Dortmund odds priced them as +1200 underdogs but they led 1-0 until the 80th minute. John Stones scored City’s opener and Haaland came back to haunt his old team by scoring City’s winner.

The position Dortmund find themselves in with injuries means 34-year old Anthony Modeste has been starting up top. So far, he’s scored just once in six starts and no Dortmund player has more than two goals. Teenager Youssoufa Moukoko has been a bright spot off the bench, though. Even so, BVB have scored multiple goals in just two of their first seven games.  The addition of Nico Schlotterbeck from SC Freiburg has shored up Dortmund’s defense. That’s meant they’ve picked up five wins in seven, despite only scoring nine times.

Odds & Preview

Given recent history, the FC Koln vs Borussia Dortmund betting odds favor Borussia Dortmund. The injury-riddled visitors sit at +105 odds to win on Saturday. Apart from Modeste, Edin Terzic has Donyell Malen and Karim Adeyemi to call on up front. Koln are +220 underdogs and a draw shows +310 odds.

Four of Dortmund’s five wins this season have come by a 1-0 scoreline. They have looked solid defensively most of the time and Koln aren’t too threatening up top. Still, Koln are one of the best teams in the league at build up play and could create that way. Both teams like to hold on to the ball so the midfield battle should be an interesting one. Jude Bellingham is a standout for Dortmund and Ellyes Shkiri has played every minute this season for Koln.

The over/under goals total currently sits at three. Under three has been more common for both teams so far this season. It’s occurred in four of seven games for both Koln and Dortmund. Notably, Borussia Dortmund have scored just three goals in their last four Bundesliga matches. It figures to be even more difficult to create chances with Reus out.
