CONCACAF Gold Cup
Jamaica vs Trinidad & Tobago
Date, time:
Location: CITYPARK, St. Louis, USA
Head-to-Head
Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago met twice in March for international friendlies. In the first match, Reon Moore scored the game’s only goal to give Trinidad & Tobago a win. Three days later, these sides played to a scoreless draw.
Notably, Trinidad are unbeaten in regulation in five of the last six meetings. They’ve been a good recent pick for betting on soccer in this fixture. However, this will be their first-ever meeting in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Jamaica Dangerous in Opener
- Last Match: 1-1 D vs. USA
- Standings: 0-1-0, 2nd Group A
- Next Match: Jul. 2nd vs. Saint Kitts & Nevis
Jamaica were mere minutes away from handing the USA just their second-ever loss in the CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage. The Reggae Boyz scored just 13 minutes in as debutant Demarai Gray whipped in a free kick for Damion Lowe to head in. Gray, an Everton winger, is one of a few Premier League players to recently switch allegiances to Jamaica.
Nearly doubling their lead in the 29th minute, Jamaica won a penalty. However, Matt Turner saved Leon Bailey’s effort and Bailey sent the rebound wide.
That failure to convert may have cost the Reggae Boyz all three points. USA substitute Brandon Vazquez equalized not long after he came on late in the second half. Overall, it was a good effort from Jamaica and they showed they’re capable of making a run in the competition.
The Jamaica vs Trinidad odds do price Jamaica as favorites for this match. Still, the Reggae Boyz haven’t won a match since last March. This Jamaican roster is stronger than many others from the last year, though.
Five EPL players started vs. the USA, which includes Gray, Bailey, Bobby Decordova-Reid, Michail Antonio and Dexter Lembikisa. Andre Blake also made some big saves vs. the USA and is a reliable option in net for coach Heimir Hallgrimsson.
Perfect Start for Trinidad and Tobago
- Last Match: 3-0 W vs. Saint Kitts & Nevis
- Standings: 1-0, 1st Group A
- Next Match: Jul. 2nd vs. USA
With a 3-0 win over Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago got their first Gold Cup win since 2015. Alvin Jones opened up the scoring by masterfully chesting down a through ball and finishing past the Saint Kitts keeper. Trinidad and Tobago dominated possession and had the better chances in the match.
Ajani Fortune doubled Trinidad’s lead in the second half when he scored from outside of the box. A Saint Kitts and Nevis own goal made it 3-0 to Trinidad and Tobago in what was a perfect start for the Soca Warriors. Trinidad enter the second match of the group stage in first place in the Group A Gold Cup standings.
With a win, Trinidad will book a place in the knockout stage for the first time since 2015. In seven matches in 2023, Trinidad have only conceded one goal. They’re unbeaten in all of those matches, which includes two games vs. Jamaica.
