CONCACAF Gold Cup: Mexico vs Honduras Betting Preview

Shaky Mexico Open with Honduras

Mexico Have Made Six of Last Eight Gold Cup Finals

Mexico’s 3-0 loss to the USA in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinal was their worst competitive CONCACAF loss since 1973. They bounced back to win third place, but Mexico have looked shaky over the last couple of years. The 2021 Gold Cup finalists open up 2023’s edition by taking on Honduras in Houston on Sunday. We’ll look at the odds and other factors affecting the match in our Mexico vs Honduras betting preview.

CONCACAF Gold Cup

Mexico vs Honduras

Date, time:
Location: NRG Stadium, Houston, USA

Head-to-Head

Mexico have won their last three games vs. Honduras, including both Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Most recently, El Tri picked up a 1-0 win in Honduras in March 2022. Honduras are scoreless in their last four matches vs. Mexico and last defeated El Tri in 2017. While the Gold Cup Groups for 2023 have Mexico and Honduras paired up, they met in the 2021 Gold Cup quarterfinal. Mexico came away with a 3-0 win and eventually advanced to the final.

Mexico Fire Coach Diego Cocca

  • Next Match: Jun. 29 vs. Haiti

The Mexican Football Federation spent little time firing Diego Cocca after the conclusion of the CONCACAF Nations League. There, Mexico fell 3-0 to the USA in the semifinals in embarrassing fashion. Two Mexican players got red-carded and the game had to be stopped due to alleged homophobic chanting by Mexican fans. Mexico managed to defeat Panama 1-0 to win third place, but the USA loss will sting for a while.

Cocca was only hired in February; one big loss was enough for his dismissal. In the meantime, Jaime Lozano will step in as interim coach. Mexico have been in shambles the last few years and not performed to the standard they’ve set for themselves.

One could argue they’re now CONCACAF’s third-best team behind the USA and Canada. In the 2022 World Cup, Mexico failed to make it out of their group for the first time since 1978. Still, there’s a lot of talent here.

Injured forwards Raul Jimenez and Hirving Lozano are not in the squad, and Santiago Gimenez needs to seize his opportunity here. He’s one of Mexico’s top talents and was the Europa League’s leading scorer in 2022-23 per 90 minutes.

Our Mexico vs Honduras betting preview also notes winger Alexis Vega pulled out of the squad due to injury, but there’s still plenty of experience on this team. Legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is still around, while Jesus Gallardo, Edson Alvarez and Orbelin Pineda all have over 50 caps.

Honduras Usually Competitive in Gold Cups

  • Next Match: Jun. 29 vs. Qatar

Honduras has a strong track record in the Gold Cup, having advanced out of their group in five of their last seven appearances. In the 2021 edition, as we look back at the FIFA World Cup scores, Honduras made it to the quarterfinals after securing victories against Panama and Grenada while suffering a defeat to Qatar in the group stage. Led by Romell Quioto’s three goals, they finished second in their group. However, their journey came to an end in the quarterfinals with a 3-0 loss to Mexico, a result that the team will undoubtedly remember.

They won’t have Quioto to call on here, as he’s out with a long-term hamstring injury. However, Honduras do have Alberth Elis and Jerry Bengtson to call on up front. Los Catrachos have won at least one match in their last three appearances at the Gold Cup. Still, the Gold Cup odds price Honduras as underdogs for this match.

Honduras fell 1-0 to Venezuela in a pre-tournament friendly, highlighting their recent performance. As we look ahead to the FIFA World Cup schedule, Honduras has experienced ups and downs in recent years. While they suffered a defeat against Curacao in the CONCACAF Nations League, they also achieved a victory against Canada. However, their most significant setback came in the final round of World Cup qualifiers, where they failed to secure a single win, finishing with a record of 0-4-10.
