FIFA Women’s World Cup: Argentina vs Sweden Odds

Argentina Still Without World Cup Win

Sweden Through to Last 16

With a resounding 5-0 win over Italy, Sweden became one of the first teams to book a place in the round of 16. Now, they’ll try to close out the group stage with a perfect record as they take on Argentina. Argentina has played 11 Women’s World Cup matches but is still without their first win. They’ll need all three points to give themselves a shot to make the last 16, though. With Argentina in desperate need of a win, we’ll preview the Argentina vs. Sweden odds.

FIFA Women’s World Cup

Argentina vs Sweden

Date, time:

Head-to-Head

This is the first meeting between these two sides on the World Cup match schedule. It’s also just the second competitive meeting. Sweden defeated Argentina 1-0 in the 2008 Olympics Group Stage as the recently retired Asa Fischer scored the game’s only goal.

Argentina Pull Off Comeback

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 28
    • Last Match: 2-2 D vs. South Africa
    • Standings: 0-1-1, 4th Group G

Argentina held Italy scoreless deep into the second half of their Women’s World Cup opener. However, La Albiceleste conceded with just a few minutes to go to fall 1-0. Argentina again fell behind in their next match vs. South Africa, trailing 2-0 with just 25 minutes to play. Seemingly out of nowhere, Sophia Braun scored one of the goals of the tournament to make it 2-1.

Five minutes later, Romina Nunez equalized, and Argentina pulled off one of the most impressive FIFA World Cup results yet. Still, with just one point through two games, Argentina absolutely need a win here. The problem is they’ve never won a Women’s World Cup match in 11 tries. They have drawn three of their last five matches at the World Cup, though. Even if Argentina win and Italy defeat South Africa, La Albiceleste will be eliminated.

Argentina’s 2023 results have been solid, as they’ve lost just one of their eight matches. They also managed to defeat New Zealand twice in a pair of friendlies back in February. However, Argentina are 0-1-6 at major tournaments vs. European teams.

Sweden Dominate and Advance

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 3
  • Last Match: 5-0 W vs. Italy
  • Standings: 2-0, 1st Group G

Sweden entered the Australia & New Zealand 2023 ranked third in the World Cup soccer rankings. So far, they’ve looked every bit like one of the best teams in the world. They pulled off a comeback to defeat South Africa 2-1 in their opening match. Then, Sweden dismantled Italy in their second match to the tune of a 5-0 victory.

The Blue and Yellow have been nearly unstoppable on set pieces. Defender Amanda Ilestedt scored two headers off of corners vs. Italy. She also scored a headed winner vs. South Africa and is currently in the Golden Boot race. Fridolina Rolfo has also scored in both of Sweden’s matches and is one of their star players.

With how well Sweden played vs. Italy, the Argentina vs. Sweden odds price the Blue and Yellow as favorites here. Even though Sweden don’t need to win the match, as they’re already in the last 16, they’ll want to stay perfect heading into the knockout stage. Based on goal difference, Sweden will very likely top Group G. Sweden, on six points, come into the final group stage match at +6. Italy, who have three points, have a -4 goal difference.

Match Analysis & Odds

There is one surefire way Argentina can advance to the round of 16. If they win the match and Italy and South Africa draw, La Albiceleste will advance to their first knockout stage. However, the Argentina vs. Sweden odds price Argentina as one-goal underdogs. Argentina come in at -105 odds to cover the spread, while Sweden -1 shows -125 odds.

Argentina will have their hands full defending, especially on set pieces, but Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson could choose to rest some of his key players. Either way, Sweden have talented backups and four of their six forwards have scored over 20 goals for the national team. Sweden are priced at -205 odds to win the match and finish the group stage perfect.

Meanwhile, Argentina come in at +525 odds to get their first-ever Women’s World Cup win. A draw, which would mean Sweden finish in first and Argentina are eliminated, displays +325 odds. Both of Sweden’s matches have finished with three or more goals so far and both over and under 2.5 goal are priced at -115 odds.
