FIFA Women’s World Cup: Canada vs Republic of Ireland Odds

Both Sides Going for First Win of Tournament

Canada Disappoint in Opener

Canada, one of the most talented teams in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, failed to capitalize in their opener. They could only manage a draw vs. a resilient Nigeria side. Now, Canada are looking for their first win of the tournament vs. Republic of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland lost to Australia in their World Cup debut but are still in the mix in Group B. We’ll take a look at Wednesday’s Canada vs. Republic of Ireland odds from an important match.

FIFA Women’s World Cup

Canada vs Republic of Ireland

Date, time:
Location: Perth Rectangular Stadium, Perth, Australia

Head-to-Head

This will be the first opportunity for betting on soccer in this fixture in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Canada and Republic of Ireland have only met once previously, in the 2014 Cyprus Cup. Canada managed a 2-1 victory in that match as Sophie Schmidt scored a 90th-minute winner.

Canada Fail to Capitalize

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 7
    • Last Match: 0-0 D vs. Nigeria
    • Next Match: July 31st vs. Australia

Canada entered their FIFA Women’s World Cup opening match vs. Nigeria as -265 moneyline favorites. They had also won their last two opening World Cup games but had to settle for a 0-0 draw in a match where they had good chances. It was a match to forget for all-time international top scorer Christine Sinclair.

The legendary Canadian attacker shot a tame penalty that Nigerian keeper Chiamka Nnadozie saved. She also missed a good chance earlier in the first half. Still, Canada can put themselves back in a good position in Group B with a win on Wednesday.

Canada are once again favorites, according to the Canada vs. Republic of Ireland odds. Last Thursday, Canada certainly could have used injured forward Janine Beckie as as they were shut out for the first time in their previous five Women’s World Cup matches. Beckie is out for the tournament with a torn ACL.

The Olympic champions are now winless in their last four matches, in all competitions. With a group stage-closing match vs. Australia looming, Canada need all three points here. Notably, they have won at least two matches in their last two appearances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Republic of Ireland Fall on World Cup Debut

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 22
  • Last Match: 0-1 L vs. Australia
  • Next Match: July 31st vs. Nigeria

In a hard-fought opening match, Republic of Ireland fell 1-0 to Australia. The Girls in Green lost on their World Cup debut but they remained competitive throughout the match. Their only shot on target came deep into stoppage time as they searched for an equalizer. After the loss, Republic of Ireland have won just one of their six matches this year.

After one match, Ireland are in last place in the World Cup group standings. However, they will be in the knockout stage mix if they can get their first World Cup win here. Midfielder Denise O’Sullivan picked up an injury in a pre-tournament friendly vs. Colombia that was abandoned due to “overly physical play”. After heading to the hospital, O’Sullivan played six days later vs. Australia and is available for this match.

Although wins have been hard to come by for Republic of Ireland, they’ve played stiff competition this year. They only conceded three goals in two matches vs. World Cup favorites USA this year. Republic of Ireland have only scored in one of their matches this year and none of their current forwards have scored 10 international goals.

Match Analysis & Odds

Heading into Wednesday’s match, Canada are listed as one-goal favorites. However, they’ve won just one of their last 13 Women’s World Cup matches by more than a one-goal margin. Canada have also scored just nine goals in their last 13 World Cup matches.

The Canada vs. Republic of Ireland odds price the Girls in Green as +475 underdogs. Meanwhile, Canada come in as -150 moneyline favorites but they’ve only won one of their 15 all-time Women’s World Cup matches vs. European opposition. Bettors can also take a draw at +265 odds but a tie wouldn’t be a satisfactory result for either side.

Republic of Ireland are going for their first goal, let alone first win, at a major tournament here. Defensive organization will be key for them as they figure to be on the back foot for long stretches of the match. With both teams struggling to score recently, over two goals still display -130 odds.
