FIFA Women’s World Cup: China vs England Odds

England Nearing Fifth Straight Knockout Stage

First Women’s World Cup Meeting Between the Sides

Both China and England have been mainstays at the FIFA Women’s World Cup but this is their first-ever meeting in the tournament. It’s important, as it will decide who moves on the last 16. England, at 2-0, just need a point to remove all doubt, while China needs a draw or win depending on the Denmark vs. Haiti score. Regardless, we’ll preview the China vs. England odds from this Group D contest.

FIFA Women’s World Cup

China vs England

Date, time:

Head-to-Head

This is the first meeting on the World Cup match schedule between the two sides. China hold a 3-1-1 record in this fixture all-time and China won the last meeting 2-1, back in 2015. Since 2015, England made two World Cup semifinals and have been European champions, though.

China Win Despite Red Card

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 14
    • Last Match: 1-0 W vs. Haiti
    • Standings: 1-1, T-2nd Group B

China’s vice-captain Zhang Rui got sent off in the 29th minute of their match vs. Haiti. Rui’s reckless challenge meant that China had to play for over an hour with just 10 players. Haiti looked like they would capitalize if not for a stunning second half save by Zhu Yu.

Later on, China won a penalty which Wang Shuang confidently slotted home. In one of the most impressive FIFA World Cup results so far, China managed to hold on for a 1-0 win. Rui will miss this match vs. England, which is a significant loss for China. She has the most appearances and third-most goals of any active Chinese player.

In China’s opening match, they fell 1-0 as Denmark scored an 89th-minute goal. China have never gone out at the group stage but their fate isn’t entirely in their hands. Even with a win, China could go home if Denmark get a better result vs. Haiti. In any case, China’s defense is almost always solid. They’ve conceded just 33 goals in 35 previous Women’s World Cup matches.

England’s Keira Walsh Scare

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 4
  • Last Match: 1-0 W vs. Denmark
  • Standings: 2-0, 1st Group D

Key England midfielder Keira Walsh went off injured in the Lionesses’ match vs. Denmark on Friday. England feared that Walsh may have torn her ACL and she was pictured on the bench on crutches in the second half. However, Walsh avoided any major injury but will miss the match vs. China. Before Walsh’s injury, England’s Lauren James scored a wonder goal from outside the box.

James made the most of her start as she was on the bench for the 1-0 win over Haiti. Her goal ended up being the only one of the match but Denmark had some excellent chances. A header careened off the post in the second half but England managed to hold on. European champions England are fourth in the World Cup soccer rankings and currently in first place in Group D.

Unsurprisingly, the China vs. England odds price the Lionesses as favorites in this match. Laura Coombs replaced Walsh in midfield in the match vs. Denmark and could do the same here. Through two matches, England haven’t conceded a goal. They’ve also kept four straight clean sheets in all competitions.

Match Analysis & Odds

England have just one win over China in five meetings but the China vs. England odds favor the Lionesses. China are one-goal underdogs but haven’t lost a group stage game by more than a one-goal margin since 2007. England -1 sits at -145 odds but have won both of their matches 1-0 so far. China have also conceded just five goals in their last eight group stage games.

Meanwhile, China +1 comes in at even odds and the Steel Roses are priced at +625 odds to pull off the upset. England display -210 odds to finish the group stage a perfect 3-0 and just need a draw to ensure knockout stage qualification. A deadlock shows +350 odds and under 2.5 goals stand at -145.
