FIFA Women’s World Cup Round of 16: Netherlands vs. South Africa Odds

2019 Finalists Netherlands Finish Ahead of USA

South Africa Dramatically Make Last 16

The Netherlands managed to emerge from Group E without a loss. In a rematch of the 2019 final, the Netherlands managed a 1-1 draw vs. two-time defending champions USA. They won their other two matches to finish on top of the group. They’ll take on South Africa, who qualified for the last 16 on a stoppage-time winner vs. Italy. As the Banyana Banyana go for their first knockout stage win, we’ll look at the Netherlands vs. South Africa odds.

FIFA Women’s World Cup

Netherlands vs. South Africa

Date, time:

Head-to-Head

This is the first meeting between the Netherlands and South Africa on their Women’s World Cup schedules. They have met eight times previously in other competitions, and the Netherlands hold an 8-0 record vs. South Africa. The Oranje have outscored South Africa 22-5 in those matches.

Netherlands Blowout Vietnam in Group Closer

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 9
    • Group Stage Matches: 1-0 W vs. Portugal, 1-1 D vs. USA, 7-0 W vs. Vietnam
    • Standings: 2-1-0, 1st Group E

The Netherlands managed only to concede one goal through three group-stage games. It came on a set piece as the USA’s Lindsay Horan equalized the match. The Oranje were incredibly impressive in their match vs. World Cup favorites USA and dominated for stretches of play. They finished first in Group E with their 7-0 win over Vietnam.

Lieke Martens opened up the scoring within ten minutes by chipping the Vietnam keeper. Jill Roord and Esmee Brugts both scored twice in the match. Brugts’ goals were both sublime finishes from outside of the box and are contenders for goal of the tournament so far.

The Netherlands’ recent FIFA World Cup results have been excellent. They’ve lost just one of their last ten matches at the Women’s World Cup and are now 9-2-3 all-time.

Here, the Netherlands vs. South Africa odds price the Oranje as favorites. Their team is full of star players, but one could be on the sidelines come Saturday. Striker Lineth Beerensteyn has missed the last two matches with an ankle injury, and it’s unclear whether she’ll return for this one. Her replacement Katja Snoeijs did manage to get a goal vs. Vietnam on Tuesday.

South Africa Advance on Last Gasp Winner

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 54
  • Group Stage Matches: 1-2 L vs. Sweden, 2-2 D vs. Argentina, 3-2 W vs. Italy
  • Standings: 1-1-1, 2nd Group G

South Africa managed to get their first-ever win at the FIFA Women’s World Cup at the most opportune time. Heading into Wednesday, they had one point and needed to defeat Italy to have a chance to advance to the last 16. Things started off poorly for Banyana Banyana as they conceded a penalty within 10 minutes.

Italy converted but handed South Africa a lifeline on a bizarre own goal that leveled the score. South Africa went up on a well-taken goal from Hildah Magaia in the 74th minute but Arianna Caruso added a second goal and equalized for Italy. In the 92nd minute, Magaia unselfishly set up Thembi Kgatlana, who scored the most important goal in Banyana Banyana’s history.

South Africa advanced over Italy and Argentina and finished in second place in Group G. It’s quite remarkable given they were the third-lowest ranked team in the World Cup soccer rankings pre-tournament. They’ve already made history by getting their first win and making their first last 16 appearance but South Africa may not be done writing their story yet.

Match Analysis & Odds

This projects to be one of the most lopsided round of 16 matchups on paper. South Africa have proven they’re a threat but the Netherlands have consistently played at a high level for the better part of the last decade.

They’re already battle tested and very nearly defeated the USA. So, it’s not exactly a shock that the Netherlands vs. South Africa odds price the Oranje as 2-goal favorites.

The Netherlands sit at -105 odds to cover the spread here and they could be staring at a potential matchup with Spain in the quarterfinals. First they’ll need to take care of business vs. South Africa and are heavy -475 moneyline favorites to do so. Meanwhile, South Africa +2 shows -125 odds as they try to contain a deadly Netherlands attack.

South Africa are dangerous on the offensive end as well. They scored in all three of their group stage matches and also conceded at least twice in each of them. So, both over and under 3.5 goals display -135 odds for this one. Meanwhile, a draw is priced at +600 odds and South Africa stand at +1000 odds to pull off a historic upset. It certainly wouldn’t be the first dramatic moment of Banyana Banyana’s tournament.
