FIFA Women’s World Cup Round of 16: Switzerland vs. Spain Odds

Switzerland Surprise Group A Winners

Spain Need Bounce Back After Heavy Defeat

Two European sides face off in the first FIFA Women’s World Cup round of 16 matchup. Surprise Group A winners Switzerland take on Group C runners-up Spain on Saturday. Switzerland finished the group stage unbeaten, while Spain are coming off a heavy 4-0 defeat to Japan. We’ll see if Spain can bounce back as we go over the Switzerland vs. Spain odds.

Switzerland vs. Spain

Date, time:

Head-to-Head

This is the first time punters can take the Switzerland vs. Spain odds in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. However, they have met nine times previously, and Spain holds a 4-2-3 record in the series. They last met in the 2019 Algarve Cup, in a match which Spain won 2-0. That’s the only head-to-head matchup of the last ten years.

Switzerland on Clean Sheet Streak

    • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 20
    • Group Stage Matches: 2-0 W vs. Philippines, 0-0 D vs. Norway, 0-0 D vs. New Zealand
    • Standings: 1-2-0, 1st Group A

Impressively, Switzerland finished first in Group A with just two goals scored. In their second Women’s World Cup appearance, La Nati are back in the round of 16. Bizarrely, Switzerland have drawn seven of their nine matches in 2023 and have kept six clean sheets. Captain and midfielder Lia Walti was questionable for the tournament, but she’s returned to make three straight starts.

Switzerland are ranked 20th in the FIFA World Cup rankings and went unbeaten in the group stage. They opened with a 2-0 win over the Philippines and grabbed points in scoreless draws vs. Norway and co-hosts New Zealand. In World Cup qualifying, Switzerland scored over four goals per game, but goals have been quite hard to come by recently.

They’ve scored just once from open play and managed just three shots on target in their last two matches. Switzerland do have some attacking weapons, like Ramona Bachmann and Barcelona’s Ana Crnogorcevic. They’ll need them to be at their best as La Nati go for their first-ever knockout stage win.

Spain Blown Away by Japan

  • FIFA Women’s World Ranking: 6
  • Group Stage Matches: 3-0 W vs. Costa Rica, 5-0 W vs. Zambia, 0-4 L vs. Japan
  • Standings: 2-1, 2nd Group C

Heading into the tournament, Spain were one of the most popular World Cup picks. They have 2022 Ballon d’Or Feminin winner Alexia Putellas on their side, along with eight other Barcelona players. Barcelona recently won the 2023 UEFA Women’s Champions League final over Wolfsburg. Despite high expectations, Spain easily won their first two matches despite player protests.

In their opener, Spain took down Costa Rica 3-0. Then, Spain destroyed Zambia 5-0 as Jennifer Hermoso and Alba Redondo both scored twice. However, Spain’s World Cup closer produced one of the most shocking FIFA World Cup results. Even though they completely dominated possession, La Roja fell 4-0 to Japan, who were incredibly clinical.

Spain will want to ensure the loss was a one-off as they managed to get a favorable round of 16 matchup. Along with Putellas, midfielder Aitana Bonmati is one to watch for Spain. Spain have lost just two of their 11 matches in 2023 and Monday’s loss was the first time they failed to score all year.

Match Analysis & Odds

The oddsmakers expect Spain to bounce back from their defeat as La Roja come in as 1.5-goal favorites. Spain show even odds to cover the spread, while Switzerland +1.5 sits at -130 odds. Switzerland haven’t lost a match by more than a one-goal margin since last July’s European championships, though.

Switzerland vs. Spain odds price La Nati as +750 underdogs as they go for their first knockout stage win. In fact, neither team in this matchup has ever advanced to the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup. Regardless, Spain are -300 moneyline favorites, which implies a 75 percent chance of victory.

Switzerland will do their best to keep their clean sheet streak alive but Spain present a big threat. La Roja have kept at least 75 percent possession in each of their games thus far but it hasn’t always translated to goals.

Spain’s last draw was also last October and one is priced at +390 odds. Spain’s matches at the Women’s World Cup have all featured three or more goals, while none of Switzerland’s matches have reached that threshold. Over 2.5 goals display -120 odds for the first of eight round of 16 games.
