Of course, Italy defeated England in penalties in the Euro 2021 final a couple of years back. The last three meetings on English soil have finished all square after 90 minutes. The previous match was the first UEFA Euro qualifiers game these sides have played against each other. Italy leads the series 3-2 in the last ten meetings, with five 90-minute draws.

England in Pole Position

England played a warm-up friendly vs. Australia on Friday and came away with a 1-0 win. Gareth Southgate rested some of his key players, including Harry Kane, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, and Kyle Walker. England fans booed Jordan Henderson, who started in central midfield. Henderson moved to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq in the Summer, and fans have voiced their displeasure about his continued selection at the expense of James Ward-Prowse.

Ollie Watkins scored the game’s only goal vs. Australia off a Jack Grealish assist. Defender Levi Colwill and striker Eddie Nketiah made their England debuts in the match. Heading into Tuesday’s crucial match vs. Italy, the Three Lions are in first place in the Group C UEFA Euro qualifiers standings. In their only September qualifier, England drew 1-1 vs. Ukraine, and they’re 5-1-0 overall.

For Tuesday’s match at Wembley, the England vs Italy odds price the hosts as -160 favorites. Kane figures to be one to watch in this match as he’s England’s all-time leading scorer. Notably, winger Bukayo Saka is out injured, so Jarrod Bowen and Phil Foden are two options to replace him. Chelsea defenders Reece James and Ben Chilwell, along with Luke Shaw, are also injured.

Italy Missing Chiesa and Tonali

Italy took on Malta on Saturday in Bari and cruised to a 4-0 victory. It was the first shutout the Azzurri have kept in three games under former Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti. Giacomo Bonaventura became the oldest player to score his first goal for Italy as the Fiorentina man scored a wonder goal. Domenico Berardi also found the net twice, and substitute Davide Frattesi scored Italy’s fourth.

The soccer lines listed Italy as 3.5-goal favorites, and they managed to cover based on Frattesi’s 93rd-minute goal. Tuesday presents the biggest test for Italy under Spalletti yet, but the Azzurri will be missing some key players. Midfielder Sandro Tonali and forward Nicolo Zaniolo are under investigation for betting offenses, so they couldn’t be included in the squad.

Meanwhile, Mateo Retegui, Federico Chiesa, Ciro Immobile, and Lorenzo Pellegrini are all injured. Italy’s last win on English soil in 90 minutes was over 20 years ago, and they’ll have to dig deep to pull this one off. Without Immobile, they don’t have a proven goal-scoring striker, and one of Giacomo Raspadori or Gianluca Scamacca may need to step up.

Match Analysis and Odds

Interestingly, England come in as one-goal favorites, but neither team has won by more than a one-goal margin in any of the last 12 meetings. England -1 currently shows even odds, while bettors can take Italy +1 at -130 odds. The England vs Italy odds price the Three Lions as -160 home favorites and Italy as +465 underdogs. Italy’s last road loss was almost one year ago.

Given how draw-heavy this fixture has historically been, punters may want to consider a draw at +285 odds. It would be a decent result for both sides and keep them on track for qualification for next Summer’s Euros. Still, England will want to clinch their place early. The last meeting finished with three goals, which was the first time in the previous six meetings that happened. Here, under 2.5 goals come in at -145 odds, as both teams are missing attacking pieces.
