Real’s Defensive Injury Crisis Continues

Real Madrid had their first local derby of the week on Thursday when they took a quick trip to Getafe. In the first half, Joselu got on the end of a Lucas Vázquez cross to put the visitors up 1-0. Joselu also scored in the second half and set up Vinicius Jr. for what looked like it what be the third but the Getafe keeper saved the Brazilian’s chip. While the 2-0 victory represents another excellent result for Real, their defensive injury crisis intensified.

With David Alaba and Eder Militao both out due to ACL injuries, Antonio Rudiger went off injured and was replaced by Eduardo Camavinga. Rudiger’s injury was described by Carlo Ancelotti as, “just a strong blow”, but his status for Sunday’s game is uncertain. If the German can’t suit up, Ancelotti may be forced to play two players out of position in central back, in Nacho and Camavinga. Plus, Aurelien Tchouameni is suspended for this derby match.

Expect Toni Kroos and Rodrygo to return to the lineup and play key roles on Sunday, along with Jude Bellingham. Bellingham is tied for first in the La Liga stats, with 14 goals but he hasn’t scored from open play since December. Meanwhile, Kroos is joint-leader in assists, with seven. Real have conceded in each of their last seven games vs. Atletico Madrid and Ancelotti will be hoping for a clean sheet on Sunday.

Morata Questionable for Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid conceded 12 goals in their first four games in January overall. Since then, they’re 4-0 and have conceded just once. On Wednesday, Atletico Madrid hosted Rayo Vallecano in another Madrid derby in La Liga. Atleti’s Reinildo Mandava, back from the Africa Cup of Nations, managed to open up the scoring in the 35th minute. Alvaro Garcia equalized for Rayo in the 42nd and Memphis Depay ended up scoring a 90th minute winner for Atletico.

With three straight La Liga wins, Atletico Madrid are in third place in the La Liga table, 10 points behind Real Madrid. While Atletico are unbeaten at home this season, they’re just 4-1-5 on the road in La Liga. They’re going into a hostile environment on Sunday and haven’t won at the Santiago Bernabeu since 2016.

While he may be available for the Derbi Madrileño, Alvaro Morata missed the midweek match with a muscle injury. Morata is Atletico’s leading scorer in La Liga this season, with 13 goals. Antoine Griezmann has also been excellent, with 11 goals and six assists. He won’t be afraid of the moment, as he’s a player who has dominated even high-profile FIFA World Cup games. Griezmann will be looking to get on the scoresheet for a fourth straight match vs. Real. Bettors should note that Thomas Lemar, Jose Gimenez and Cesar Azpilicueta are out for Atleti.

Match Analysis & Odds

Atletico Madrid made a few moves in the Winter transfer window to help shore up their roster. They brought in promising young midfielder Arthur Vermeeren from Royal Antwerp but this may be too big of a moment for him to feature in. Atletico also have Gabriel Paulista as extra defensive cover. Real stood pat and, as a result, they don’t have many defensive options. Still, they’ve managed to set the tone in La Liga this season. The Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid odds currently list Real as -130 favorites.

Real have won three of their last four La Liga home games vs. their rivals and Los Blancos pose a constant attacking threat.
