Same Old, Same Old for ‘Bama

Last season was one of unfulfillment for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Nick Saban and Co. won another 11 games but missed out on another national championship. The Crimson Tide didn’t even make the College Football Playoff, resulting in losing twice in the regular season. Both losses came on the road in SEC play: 52-49 to Tennessee on Oct. 15 and 32-31 to LSU on Nov. 5.

Alabama must replace Heisman-winning quarterback and No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young. Defensive end Will Anderson Jr., the two-time SEC Defensive Player of the Year, is also gone, along with running back Jahmyr Gibbs and safety Brian Branch. That’s a haul, but few, if any coaches have proven more adaptable to the ever-changing nature of college football than Saban, a seven-time national champion.

Quarterback continues to draw most of the attention this offseason, with Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner, Jalen Milroe, and Ty Simpson all in the mix to take over for Young. Buchner opened 2022 as Notre Dame’s starter before injuries ultimately derailed his season. He then transferred to Alabama, where he’s reunited with former offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Familiarity should help.

Alabama is a surefire preseason Top 5 team regardless of who’s under center. Oh, and a national championship contender. Isn’t that how it usually is?

National Championship Odds: It’s National Title or Bust

There’s no other way to put it. Anything short of a national championship will be a colossal disappointment, especially if SEC rival Georgia manages to three-peat. Year in, year-out, Alabama is near the top of the NCAAF rankings. The Crimson Tide have been ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll at one point in each of the last 12 seasons.

Will 2023 be any different? While Georgia remains a +225 national championship favorite, Alabama is behind at +600. The Crimson Tide haven’t faced odds this long since 2016, when they were also +600, but that speaks partly to Georgia’s recent dominance. Many NCAAF predictions have designated the Bulldogs as the clear team to beat.

It’s never wise to bet against Saban, especially when he has redemption on his mind.

Conference Odds: Georgia or Alabama? Alabama or Georgia?

Although Alabama owns the second-lowest Alabama Crimson Tide future odds behind Georgia (-110), it’s moved from +220 to +300 over the last few months. Despite some hesitancy, the Crimson Tide remains a strong bet so long as they stay healthy.

Remember, the Crimson Tide has won eight of the last 14 SEC titles. It’s likely either them or Georgia in 2023, and 50-50 odds aren’t bad.

Regular Season Wins: Not Much Room for Error

Alabama has averaged 12.4 wins over the last five seasons, including a program-record-tying 14 in 2018. That includes the postseason, but the point is that Alabama is always reaching a high bar among college football teams.

Now, the Crimson Tide have gone Under three straight NCAAF seasons. Nothing is guaranteed in betting.  With 12 regular season games, oddsmakers aren’t leaving them much room for error at 10.5. Notably, the Over has been juiced from +120 to +140 since the start of the preseason.

After opening Sept. 2 against Middle Tennessee — the Crimson Tide, by the way, are 39-point favorites — Alabama hosts a potential preseason Top 10 team in Texas the following week. That’s the only real roadblock in non-conference play for the Crimson Tide, who then will visit South Florida before dipping into SEC play. Alabama is fortunate to get a few of its tougher matchups in Tuscaloosa, including Ole Miss (Sept. 23), Tennessee (Oct. 21), and LSU (Nov. 4).

To Make Playoffs: Crimson Tide a Good Bet to Return

Alabama has been a mainstay in the CFP. Last season, the Crimson Tide missed qualifying only the second time since the format was introduced.

If the Crimson Tide can get through the regular season undefeated, it’ll likely get in no matter what happens in the SEC Championship Game. They have that kind of pull with the selection committee. But if not? It’s SEC title or bust. Keep that in mind while assessing the Alabama Crimson Tide future odds.
