Philadelphia opened at -2.5 and is now down to a point. If the trend continues, we could be looking at a pick’em. And Eagles backers will gladly take that.
This is what happens when you lose to the Jets as a 6.5-point favorite. The Eagles are now just 2-2-1 against the spread (ATS) and play the NFL’s hottest offense. Miami overcame a 14-point deficit and hung another 40+ points as it took down Carolina. It was another high-scoring game, so this matchups’ total is the highest for Week 7 at 52 points.
Dolphins are the NFL’s Sexiest Posers
Yes, we just called the NFL’s most explosive offense a pretender. We don’t care that Miami is averaging nearly 40 points and 500 yards a game or that it is 8-1 ATS in its last nine games. Look at the competition. Its wins have come against opponents with a combined record of 5-24. If Miami was in MMA, it would be considered a “can crusher” – a fighter that pads their resume by beating up gym teachers.
The Dolphins are popular and keep climbing the NFL power rankings. This team is fast and exciting. Tua Tagovailoa leads quarterbacks in passing yards and touchdowns. The running game is averaging a whopping 6.5 yards per carry. And with an average score of 3.21 points per drive, Miami is nearly guaranteed to score every time the offense touches the ball.
But that’s just one side of the ball. Miami’s defense is subpar and is ranked 25th in scoring. In both passing and rushing, the defense is below average. It’s why Buffalo blew Miami out on the road. And it’s also why five of its last seven games have exceeded the total.
The Loss is the Best Thing for the Eagles
The Eagles needed to lose at some point. This team has not played to its potential despite being 5-1. And the loss to the Jets in a game where quarterback Jalen Hurts played terribly is the wake-up call this team needs.
Philadelphia continues to rack up yards and move the ball at will. But the team is struggling to score with a 45.4% red zone scoring percentage, ranked 23rd overall. Hurts is a big reason, as he’s completed just 45.4% of his passes in the red zone. The Pro Bowler has also tossed the same amount of touchdowns as interceptions (seven) overall.
And it’s not just Hurts. The defense has been hurt by quarterbacks, having given up the fourth-most passing touchdowns with an average passer rating of 94.7. With all that, Philadelphia needs to get its *bleep* right to deal with the NFL’s top passing offense.
“It’s OK to [be] a little frustrated because sometimes you need that, to light a fire under everybody’s ass,” wide receiver A.J. Brown said. “I think everybody’s got this laser focus now. And you be needing that.”
Cry, Eagles, Cry?
With Miami coming to town, Philadelphia is facing a real possibility of losing two straight games. Tagovailoa is playing peerlessly while Hurts looks like he’s regressed. On top of that, the Dolphins’ juggernaut of an offense could continue to hurt the Eagles’ vulnerable passing defense.
