Flyers vs Leafs Odds: Toronto Faces a Real Tough Philly

Leafs Could Be in a For a Letdown Spot Against Flyers

Toronto Beats Philadelphia Per the NHL Odds

The Toronto Maple Leafs just took care of business against the St. Louis Blues, a resurgent underdog these days. And it gets to do the same against the Philadelphia Flyers, which has won all four of its games after the NHL All-Star break. Toronto is favored at -185 is it typically is at home. But backing these Flyers vs Leafs odds can be tricky if we dig deeper.

Toronto Remains Tough to Trust

The Maple Leafs will always be an overrated team whether on the ice or the NHL odds. Toronto is consistently listed as a favorite due to its immense popularity. But its results have been less than ideal; just 21-24 as a favorite (21-18-6) and 16-35 on the puck line (against the spread (ATS)) – 8-17 at home. These Flyers vs Leafs odds are not surprising.

Toronto is 5-2 in its last seven NHL games and has won six straight games against Philadelphia. However, the Leafs have also not won consecutive games since returning from the break and have lost seven straight conference games.

The Leafs’ last victory against an Eastern Conference opponent was a road game against Columbus on December 23. The last time they beat a conference opponent with a winning record was on December 12, a road game versus the Rangers. And the last time they did it at home was against Florida on November 28.

And sure, Toronto has some excuses. The team is riddled with absences. Stars Morgan Rielly on defense and Mitchell Marner at right wing are on the NHL injury list. Add center and team captain John Tavares and left winger Calle Jarnkrok along with two goaltenders and it’s amazing to see the Flyers vs Leafs odds as wide as it is now.

Philadelphia is +145 and could be an enticing underdog to back. The Flyers are 4-1 in their last five games as underdogs or as visitors. And having recaptured their mojo following the break, Philadelphia looks primed to burn Toronto chalk bettors.

Backing Philadelphia at +1½ on the puck line could be one of the best plays for NHL picks and parlays, especially with a sterling 22-4 ATS record on the road.

Philadelphia Will Need To Neutralize Toronto

But if the Flyers are to upset the Flyers vs Leafs odds, they will need to keep the scoring low. The totals are set at 6.5 with the ‘over’ favored at -120. If this is the case, this favors Toronto as the Leafs are better equipped to win a high-scoring game.

The Flyers average just under three goals per game. That’s why the team is just 6-23 (6-18-5) when it allows opponents to score three goals. It is winless (0-13-3) when opponents score 4+ goals against it. John Tortorella’s guys usually need to grind down their opponents over 60 minutes to win.

But to beat Toronto, Philadelphia may need to score more than it is accustomed to. It rallied to beat Arizona 5-3. The emergence of center Morgan Frost has been a boon for the team’s NHL hockey playoffs’ chances. The 24-year-old is blossoming into a franchise center following his benching on January 4 against Columbus.

“I had some things I wanted to kind of get off my chest,” Frost said in regards to his exchange with Tortorella during the game.

John Tortorella also explained, “That’s a huge step for me with Frosty, is him coming in and saying ‘You know what, this is what I think.’ It’s so important that players do that.”

The Flyers have a PDO of 102.0 when Frost is on the ice. Philadelphia is 13-6 (13-4-2) when he scores a point and most of these losses have come against hockey teams like Tampa Bay and Colorado. We can place Toronto in this tier, hence the odds.
