Penguins Trying to Waddle Back to the Top

Continuing Our Maple Leafs vs Penguins Line Preview: The Pittsburgh Penguins look to pick up their third victory in their last four games in the NHL standings 2022 and second win against the Toronto Maple Leafs in less than a week as they return home for a single contest before hitting the road once again for a three-game excursion.

The Penguins earned a 4-2 win in Toronto on Friday night, with forward Evgeni Malkin scoring a goal and an assist, while winger Jake Guentzel scored his team leading eighth tally of the season on a empty net shot, securing the victory.

One night later, the Penguins played the Montreal Canadiens, dropping a 5-4 overtime decision that saw both clubs alternate goals in the third period. Forward Jason Zucker chipped in with three assists and goaltender Tristan Jarry made 37 saves on 42 shots faced in the losing effort.

Maple Leafs Blowing in the Breeze?

The Toronto Maple Leafs head back onto the road after a short three-game homestand to take on a Penguins club they dropped a 4-2 decision against on Friday night. Forward William Nylander scored his sixth goal of the year on the power-play in the second period, while backup goaltender Erik Kallgren played well despite the loss, making 19 saves over 22 shots faced.

Toronto beat the Vancouver Canucks a night later by the score of 3-2. After yielding two Vancouver goals in the first period, the Leafs exploded back with three scores in the middle frame. Superstar Auston Matthews scored his seventh goal of the season early in the second, which was also the team’s only power-play goal of the evening.

Veteran Jordie Benn netted the game-winner midway through the period for his first tally of the year. Kallgren came through with another strong performance, making 27 saves on 29 of the Habs’ total shots on goal. The Maple Leafs are hoping that both of their top goalies Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov can return to the lineup after being out due to NHL Injuries.
