Sabalenka Headlines bett1open: Wimbledon Tune-Up in Berlin

Can Ons Jabeur Make Another Championship Run at The bett1open in Berlin?

Even with Prominent Withdrawals, There Are Seven Top-10 Players in Berlin Field

It has been a rough start for the upcoming WTA event in Berlin with Americans Jessica Pegula, Sloane Stephens and Shelby Rogers joining paula Badosa as recent withdrawals. There is still plenty of star power to keep an eye on when looking at the bett1open odds.

When looking at the WTA rankings, Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina and Carolina Garcia give the former German Open three of the top four ranked players in the world.

Sixth-ranked Ons Jabeur is the defending champion as she is one of seven top-10 players in the field.

The last player to win back-to-back titles was Justine Henin in 2002 and 2003.

Sabalenka is tied with world No. 1 Iga Swiatek for the best odds of +400 in the Wimbledon outrights with Rybakina not far behind at +450 with Jabeur coming in at +1000.

The main draw gets underway on Monday.

Sabalenka Ready to Return to Winning Ways

It has been a bit of a bumpy ride for world No. 2 Sabalenka.

She won the Australian Open title in January after dropping the first set to Rybakina, she also won the title at Madrid and reached the Indian Wells final.

However, a Round of 64 loss to No. 134 Sofia Kenin in Rome was followed by a defeat to No. 43 Karolina Muchova in the French Open semifinals.

Sabalenka has lost her first match, both in three sets, in her previous two appearances in Berlin. That hasn’t stopped her from being a front-runner in the bett1open odds.

How Healthy is Rybakina?

Rybakina was drawing plenty of action from the tennis bettors after winning pretty comfortably in her first two matches at the French Open before she had to pull out of her third-round showdown with Sara Sorribes Tormo.

She knows something about retirements and withdrawals with three of her matches on the way to the Italian Open title a result of retirements. Keep an eye on the WTA odds for the dangerous Rybakina, if she is good to go.

Rybakina had three wins over top-5 ranked players on the hard courts in Indian Wells and Miami. Is she ready to make a run in Berlin?

Sabalenka’s lone appearance in Berlin ended with a Round of 16 loss to Garbine Muguruza in 2021. Now according to the bett1open odds, she is one of the top players to keep an eye on.

Garcia Ready to Make a Run?

No. 4 ranked Caroline Garcia is still looking for her first title of 2023.

Garcia hasn’t won more than two matches in the same tournament since advancing to the Round of 16 at Indian Wells back in March.

She has six losses to players outside the top 50 this year and that is certainly a cause for concern.

She won a Wimbledon tune-up in Germany in 2022, but it didn’t come at Berlin.

Don’t Count Out Defending Champion

Jabeur’s lone tournament title was back in April and it came in the United States as the clay-court event in Charleston.

Jabeur had a solid run at the French Open before fading in the third set in the quarterfinals to Beatriz Haddad Maia.

The players she has faltered against in 2023 aren’t in the bett1open field so perhaps that bodes well in her attempt to defend her title. She lost just one set in winning the championship in her first attempt. Is she ready to conjure up some more magic in this year’s event?

Gauff Looks to Make Herself at Home

Some of the other top American players won’t be taking part in this tournament so that will bring even more attention to Gauff as she looks to become the first U.S.-born player to reach the finals at Berlin since Venus Williams in 2004. Mary Joe Fernandez is the last American to win the tournament and that happened in 1997. Of course, it should be noted that there was no tournament held from 2009-2020.

Gauff struggled a bit after reaching the Indian Wells quarterfinals before winning a pair of three-set matches on her way to the French Open quarterfinals.

Gauff didn’t drop a set in her first three matches at the 2022 bett1open until running into Jabeur in the quarterfinals.

Former Grand Slam Champs Look to Make Some Noise

Petra Kvitova knows something about winning on grass as she is a two-time Wimbledon champion. From 2010-14, she reached at least the quarterfinals each year. Since then, she is just 9-7 at Wimbledon so perhaps she can gain some confidence in Berlin.

Victoria Azarenka did reach the Australian Open semifinals in January, her best Grand Slam showing since a run to the 2020 US Open final. She hasn’t done much since that run in Melbourne. Azarenka did reach the 2021 bett1open semifinals in 2021.

Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open singles champion, did make it to the French Open finals in mixed doubles earlier this year.

She won a couple of singles matches at Roland Garros as well.
