Wimbledon Women’s Final Preview: Can Ons Jabeur Win First Grand Slam Title?

Ons Jabeur Is Back in Wimbledon Women's Final After Eliminating Sabalenka in Semifinals

Unseeded Vondrousova Is A Surprising Women’s Singles Finalist at Wimbledon

One of the Wimbledon finalists is not a surprise as the semifinal showdown between Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur featured two of the top contenders. However, few people could have envisioned that unseeded Marketa Vondrousova would be Jabeur’s opponent in the Wimbledon final. The Wimbledon women’s final preview favors Jabeur to win Wimbledon for the first time.

Top-seeded Iga Swiatek and defending champion Elena Rybakina failed to reach the semifinals as Swiatek fell to unseeded Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals, while Rybakina lost to Jabeur in three sets in the semifinals.

Jabeur was viewed as the next best choice behind Swiatek, Rybakina, and Sabalenka coming into the tournament as she has reached the Wimbledon finals for the second year in a row.

Before this year’s run, Vondrousova lost in the first round three times and was eliminated in the second round in 2021 at Wimbledon. Now she is the first unseeded women’s singles finalist at Wimbledon since Billie Jean King in 1963 and the second-lowest ranked women’s player to reach the ladies’ singles final at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club. Since the ranking system began in 1975, only Serena Williams made the Wimbledon finals ranked lower than No. 42 Vondrousova and that came because Williams was returning to the WTA tour after giving birth.

When looking at the Wimbledon schedule, the women’s final is set at 9 a.m. ET (2 p.m. in London) and will air on ESPN. Jabeur is priced at -230 to win the title with the total set at 22 games (-105 to go over and -115 to finish under).

Jabeur Looks to Seal the Deal

Since Jabeur reached the quarterfinals at the French Open, it has been a bit of a grind as she lost her first match to qualifier Julie Niemeier in Berlin and then fell to Camila Giorgi in the Round of 16 at Eastbourne.

It has been a different story since arriving at Wimbledon as she has taken out 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, defending Wimbledon champion Rybakina, and then Sabalenka.

It is a much different story from 2022 when she faced only one ranked player before falling to Rybakina in the Wimbledon finals.

Jabeur was the underdog, with +140 odds, against Sabalenka in the semifinals. When looking at the 2023 Wimbledon women’s final preview, it will be a much different story in Saturday’s title match.

Jabeur is the first women’s player to defeat three top-10 players at Wimbledon in the same year since Serena Williams accomplished the feat in 2012.

She is trying to avoid another piece of history associated with the legendary Williams. Serena is the last player before Jabeur to reach back-to-back women’s singles finals at Wimbledon. Williams lost to Angelique Kerber in the 2018 final and to Simona Halep in the 2019 title match. Jabeur is hoping for a better result after losing the final two sets to Rybakina in last year’s final.

Jabeur credited her improved mental toughness for helping her rebound after losing the first set to Sabalenka.

“I’m learning to transform bad energy into good energy,” Jabeur said. “After the anger of the first set I just tried to stay focused. I’m accepting it, digging deep to go and win this match, and hopefully this tournament.”

Comeback Almost Complete for Vondrousova

It has been quite the comeback for unseeded Marketa Vondrousova as she missed three of the four Grand Slam tournaments as a result of a wrist injury.

Vondrousova knocked out three seeded players to reach her second Grand Slam final after reaching the French Open final in 2019.

“After everything, I’ve been through, two surgeries, it’s not always easy to come back,” Vondrousova told the media after her semifinal wins. “You don’t know if you can play at this level and if you can be back at the top and back at these tournaments.

“I just feel like I’m just grateful to be on a court again, to play without pain. I’m just really grateful for it.”

It started with a second-round victory over Veronika Kudermetova and then came another straight-set win over No. 20 seed Donna Vekic. After No. 32 seed Marie Bouzkova took out fifth-seeded Caroline Garcia in one of the upsets when it comes to the 2023 Wimbledon results, Vondrousova rebounded after dropping the first set to eliminate Bouzkova.

Her biggest win came in the quarterfinals versus No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula with Vondrousova winning 6-4 in the third set before winning 6-3, 6-3 over Elena Svitolina.

Vondrousova was priced at -135 to win the semifinal match. The match came in well under the total of 22.5.

When looking at the 2023 Wimbledon women’s finals preview, she will be the underdog.

Can Vondrousova Do It Again?

This will be the third meeting of the year between Vondrousova and Jabeur with Vondrousova winning the first two.

When looking at tennis scores, Vondrousova won 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 in the second round at the Australian Open in January as she converted eight of the 16 breakpoint opportunities and took advantage of Jabeur’s struggles to win points on her second serve.

Vondrousova overcame five double faults to upset Jabeur 7-6, 6-4 in the third round at Indian Wells.

Jabeur had won three of the four meetings coming into 2023. She did need three sets to emerge victorious in the first round of the 2022 Stuttgart event.
