Bet on ATP Mallorca: Upsets Galore in Wimbledon Tune-Up

Five Seeded Players Lost Opening Match in One of Final Tournaments Before Wimbledon

None of Five Players from Spain Made it Past Round 16

Some big names won the first two Mallorca Open titles with Daniil Medvedev topping Sam Querrey in the 2021 final and Stefanos Tsitsipas topping Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut in the third-set tiebreaker to wrap up the 2022 tournament. Those who bet on ATP Mallorca event were going big on Tsitsipas winning back-to-back titles. However, he is one of the many seeded players who suffered early exits.

Medvedev followed up his title run at Mallorca in 2021 with a trip to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon. Tsitsipas lost in the third round at Wimbledon in 2022 after winning his final warm-up tournament. He has reached the Australian Open final and French Open quarterfinals in 2023 so perhaps a longer run at Wimbledon is coming.

Adrian Mannarino is priced at -120 to open Yannick Hanfmann in one semifinal with Lloyd Harris at -135 to end the run by American Christopher Eubanks in the other semifinal. There has been slight movement in the odds overnight as Harris was priced at -140.

Mannarino is ranked 43rd, up three spot after back-to-back quarterfinal appearances. Hanfmann is at a career-high No. 48 in the rankings. Eubanks is ranked 77th and Harris comes in at No. 296. Only Mannarino has won a title on the ATP tour.

When looking at ATP betting odds, Tsitsipas is tied for 10th at +4000 in the odds to win the men’s singles title at Wimbledon.

Open Season On the Seeds

The ATP event in Mallorca was not kind to the favorites with Adrian Mannarino the only seeded player to make it past the quarterfinals. Top-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas received a first-round bye and then lost to Yannick Hanfmann, falling 6-2 in the third set in the Round of 16, stunning those who bet on ATP Mallorca matches.

It was a similar story for No. 2 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain as he was eliminated by lucky loser Pavel Kotov in his first match. No. 3 seed Ben Shelton was stunned by fellow American Christopher Eubanks, losing a third-set tiebreaker. No. 5 seed Alexander Bublik, citing fatigue, pulled out of the tournament.

No. 6 seed Richard Gasquet and No. 7 seed Bernabe Zapata Miralles both lost in the first round.

When the dust cleared, there were as many lucky losers (the highest-ranked tennis players to lose in the final round of qualifying) as seeded players in the quarterfinals.

Even Mannarino had to work to do as he had to win a second-set tiebreaker in his match with Guido Pella. It was just that type of tournament at the 2023 ATP Mallorca event.

End of an Era

There were four players from Spain in the tournament and it was not hard to guess which one drew the largest push from the crowd.

Feliciano Lopez, who has played in more Grand Slam tournaments than any other men’s player, announced that Mallorca would be his last ATP tournament. Those who bet on ATP Mallorca event were going with their heart when putting down bets on Lopez.

The charismatic Lopez thrived on hard courts and was ranked as high as No. 12 in the ATP rankings. He is currently at 634.

Lopez, who won more matches on grass than any other men’s player from Spain, defeated Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson before his run ended with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Hanfmann.

Lopez played in 79 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments. He reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals three times and made it to the quarterfinals at the 2015 US Open as well. He won the French Open men’s doubles title in 2016 playing with Marc Lopez.

“I feel very proud of having been able to make it through 20 years as a professional without missing one, but also of having left a good impression on my fellow players and on the people I have spent time with,” Lopez said in an interview with ATP tour.com.

Lopez was a part of four Davis Cup title-winning teams with Spain and very popular with his countrymen.

“It’s sad, and difficult,” Rafael Nadal said in a statement. But in general, you have been a person that made the tour a happier place.”

“On a personal level, you have always a person very close to me since I joined the tour.

“I will miss you very much.”
