Betting On Rally Kenya: How WRC Odds Stack Up

Breakdown of Events & Odds as Drivers Tackle the Challenging Safari Rally Kenya

The World Rally Championship (WRC) is the world’s highest level of rally racing. Drivers and crews for multiple teams compete in events covering hundreds of miles over four days to determine who can get through timed sections, called stages, the fastest. In 2023, the WRC is holding 13 events on five continents. This week marks the championship’s only event in Africa so books opened for betting on Rally Kenya before racing on Thursday.

How WRC Events Work

There are three primary types of surfaces for rallying: gravel, snow, and tarmac. Gravel has long been the most popular type of event on WRC schedules. Of the 13 events in 2023, eight are gravel rallies, three are tarmac, one is snow, and one is a mixed surface event. Most drivers are good on gravel but some are better at snow or tarmac. This season starts with Rally Monte Carlo (mixed) and ends with Rally Japan (tarmac).

Each team is allowed up to three driver/co-driver pairings for each event that can score manufacturer points. There are three teams in WRC in 2023: M-Sport Ford World Rally Team, Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team, and Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT.

Toyota Gazoo Racing’s won the last four world championships in a row and their drivers often lead the WRC odds. These odds are formatted like money line wagers. A favorite at +250 will net you $250 for a $100 bet.

Rally Kenya’s Entrants & Betting Odds

For the Rally Kenya event, M-Sport Ford entrants were Pierre-Louis Loubet, 2019 WRC champion Ott Tänak, and Jourdan Serderidis. Hyundai Shell Mobis’ drivers are Esapekka Lappi, Dani Sordo, and Thierry Neuville.

Toyota entered eight-time WRC champion Sébastien Ogier, Elfyn Evans, and defending champion Kalle Rovanperä. Toyota also entered Takamoto Katsuta but he is not eligible for manufacturer points.

Betting on Rally Kenya is close in 2023. The championship’s seen five drivers win over six events coming into the weekend. The starting order is decided by championship standing, with the overall leader going first, and so on. Starting first is tough when gravel or snow-covered roads are not broken in yet.

This week, a driver like Ogier who has won multiple events in 2023 but is fifth in the championship may have the best run of the top drivers. He had the shortest odds for victory at +220. Ogier led a trio of favorites ahead of Rovanperä and Neuville.

For betting on Rally Kenya and other WRC events this season, there’s often a second tier of runners who are less likely to win but have a shot at a podium in a good week. For Rally Kenya – Tänak and Lappi are those drivers.

Following Rally Kenya, there are another four gravel events in Estonia, Finland, Greece, and Chile. The final two rounds in Germany and Japan are specifically tarmac.
