Brazil vs Argentina: What Went Down In the World Cup Qualifier

After Chaos Ensued At the Beginning of the Match, Tensions Were Running High

A Tough One

Lionel Messi confronted Brazil winger Rodrygo subsequent to the latter’s accusation of Argentina’s perceived lack of courage in their decision to leave the field during an incident where their fans were subjected to police aggression on Tuesday evening.

Before the commencement of the World Cup qualifier, the Maracana stadium witnessed highly unseemly incidents that spread like wildfire in soccer news , all characterized by law enforcement personnel aggressively advancing toward the visiting fans as the Brazilian national song was being played.

Several spectators sustained injuries, including cuts and bruises, necessitating medical attention. In response, the players from the Argentina team promptly approached the section designated for their supporters in an attempt to alleviate the escalating conflict.

Upon Messi’s departure from the pitch, the recipient of the Ballon d’Or award was observed communicating with the officials, expressing the intention to go. It is not feasible to engage in activities under the current conditions, he said.

The heated atmosphere during Brazil vs Argentina had now overflowed onto the field when Argentina’s players returned from a prolonged absence; Rodrygo of Real Madrid and Rodrigo De Paul of Atletico argued about Rodrygo’s decision to return to the locker room.

Messi attempted to intervene, but the situation worsened when Argentine broadcaster TyC Sports reported that Rodrygo had referred to the Argentina national team as “cowards.”

After that, the Inter Miami playmaker became furious with Rodrygo, grabbing him by the neck and yelling out something like, “We are the world champions!” Where did our courage go? Be careful what you say.”

Rodrygo attempted to escalate the argument as Messi left, but De Paul escorted him away.

What About the Soccer Game?

Upon the commencement of the match, a fervent and intense atmosphere permeated the field, culminating in Nicolas Otamendi successfully scoring the game’s sole goal. Additionally, Joelinton was expelled from the play due to his act of aggression towards De Paul. The red card, however, was just one of 42 fouls committed during the 90-minute battle.

Remarkably, Argentina’s triumph with a score of 1-0 was the inaugural occasion in which Brazil suffered a defeat in a World Cup qualifying match on their home turf. This outcome further compounds Brazil’s predicament as it represents their third consecutive loss, resulting in their current standing of sixth position in the standings, a considerable eight points behind table-topping Argentina.

In reference to the inappropriate incidents transpiring within the spectator area and the subsequent choice to abandon the match, Messi conveyed to the press in the aftermath: “We observed the actions of law enforcement officers engaging in physical altercations with individuals, including some of our own relatives present at the venue.”

The ugly side of professional sports reared its unattractive self last night, and let’s hope we don’t have to witness such disheartening actions with soccer rumors again!
