LASK Linz Standings & History
Linz Early Days
Based in Austria’s third-largest city Linz, LASK are one of the biggest clubs in Austrian football. In the last couple of decades, they’ve bounced between divisions but have established themselves as a European contender in the last few seasons.
LASK were founded in 1908 as Linzer Sport Klub and changed their name to Linzer Athletik Sport Klub in 1919. They won 10 state titles in the LASK team stats between 1924 and 1939. In 1931, they won the Austrian Amateur championship, Upper Austrian state championship and Upper Austrian cup.
They first played in the top flight in the 1940-41 campaign but many of their players were on military duty. So, they finished in last place and a period of promotions and relegations followed.
Domestic Double
LASK’s best-ever season came in 1964-65. Led by legendary striker Helmut Köglberger, they added Austrian League and Austrian Cup titles to the LASK team stats for the first time. They were the first-ever club from outside Vienna to become Austrian champions.
One of LASK’s best-ever moments was a second round UEFA Cup victory over Inter Milan in 1985. A Johann Gröss goal was enough to defeat a star-studded Inter in the first leg, but LASK fell 4-0 in the second leg.
LASK went back down to the second division in 1989 but returned to the top flight five years later. They and intracity rivals FC Linz earned promotion at the same time and the clubs controversially merged in 1997 along with their city rivals FC Linz, with whom they were later controversially merged in 1997.
Financial Troubles and Resurrection
FC Linz fans were upset at the merger and created a phoenix club called Blau-Weiss Linz. The two clubs now have a heated rivalry but LASK have gotten the better of FC Linz in recent times. LASK later fell on tough financial times and fell down to the regional third tier in 2012. A group of investors called the “Freunde des LASK” bought the team in 2013 and the club has succeeded ever since.
They returned to the second division in 2014 and returned to the Austrian Bundesliga in 2017 under Oliver Glasner. LASK immediately re-established themselves as one of the best clubs in Austria and qualified for the 2018-19 Europa League. However, they were eliminated in the playoff rounds. The 2018-19 season was one of the best in the LASK team stats for decades. They finished in second place in the Austrian Bundesliga and made the Europa League group stage.
In 2019-20, LASK defeated PSV Eindhoven and Sporting to advance to the Europa League round of 16. There, they lost to Manchester United. They were Austrian Cup runners up in 2020-21 and made the round of 16 of the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2021-22.
LASK also defeated Zrinjski Mostar in the 2023-24 Europa League playoff to advance to the group stage. However, the Europa League betting odds price LASK at just +30000 to win the competition. Austrian Bundesliga betting advice generally pins LASK down as a perennial European contender.
