Deportivo Alaves was founded in 1920 but originally called Sport Friends. In 1921, they changed their name to Deportivo Alaves and played in the second division in the first professional season, in 1929. After a 42-year absence, Alaves returned to La Liga in 1998 and avoided relegation by a single point.
