Deportivo Alaves Stats & History
Deportivo Alaves was founded in 1920 but originally called Sport Friends. In 1921, they changed their name to Deportivo Alaves and played in the second division in the first professional season, in 1929. One of the most notable Alaves stats is the fact that they were the first team to ever win promotion to La Liga.
The first spell in La Liga for the Basque club lasted just three years before relegation. It took Alaves over 20 years to return to the top flight, as they won the Segunda Division again in 1954. Unfortunately, they only managed two La Liga seasons before getting relegated again.
Throughout much of the 1960s, Alaves played in the third division in Spain without much success. Despite winning the Tercera Division in 1961, 1965 and 1968, Alaves couldn’t gain a foothold in the second division. That changed in 1974 as they played nine consecutive seasons in the second tier. However, relegation followed once again and they slipped to the fourth tier in 1986.
Steadily climbing up the divisions, Alaves returned to the third tier in 1990 and the Segunda Division in 1995. After a 42-year absence, Alaves returned to La Liga in 1998 and avoided relegation by a single point. One of the most incredible Deportivo Alaves stats is their two wins over Barcelona in the following campaign. In the 1999-2000 season, Alaves managed a sixth place finish, which is their best ever in the top flight.

Alaves made a Cinderella run in their first-ever foray into European competition. In the 2000-01 UEFA Cup, Alaves knocked out Inter Milan, Rayo Vallecano and FC Kaiserslautern en route to the final. In one of the greatest matches in UEFA Cup/Europa League history, Alaves fell to Liverpool 5-4 in extra time.
With a seventh place finish in 2001, Alaves qualified for the UEFA Cup for a second straight season. However, they weren’t as successful this time around and got relegated from La Liga again in 2003. Alaves returned to La Liga in 2005-06 but just for one season and they were playing in the third tier again by 2009.
With a third division title in 2013 and a second tier one in 2016, Alaves played their way back into La Liga. In their first season, they outperformed their La Liga odds to finish ninth and make their first Copa Del Rey final. Alaves were relegated in 2022 after a six-year La Liga stay, which was their longest to date. Betting advice suggests being cautious with Alaves in 2022-23 as they just lost star striker Joselu.
