Real Betis Stats & History
España Balompié was established in September 1907. Around the same time, a club named Betis Football Club was formed due to a split with Sevilla FC. In 1914 Balompié and Betis merged to form Real Betis Balompié. Their green and white jersey comes from one of the founders, who studied in Scotland and emulated the Celtic kits.
Betis made the Copa Del Rey final for the first time in 1931 but lost 3-1 to Athletic Bilbao. They became the first club from Andalusia to play in La Liga after winning the 1932 Segunda Division title. Three years later, under Patrick O’Connell, Betis won their first La Liga title. It remains a high point in the Real Betis stats, especially because they haven’t won the league since.
Just 15 months after Betis’s title win, only two players remained. Due to the club’s poor financial situation and the Spanish Civil War, Betis declined rapidly. They returned to the Segunda Division in 1940 and dropped down to the third tier in 1947. Upon returning to the second tier, in 1954, Betis became the first club to win the first three divisions in Spain.
By the end of the 1950s, Real Betis were back in La Liga. They even managed to finish third in 1964 as the club was resurrected under president Benito Villamarin. When Villamarin stepped down, Betis immediately fell down to the second division and only stabilized in the top tier in 1974-75.

In 1977, Betis made the Copa Del Rey final, which finished in a 2-2 draw vs. Athletic Bilbao. One of the most notable moments in the Real Betis stats is their 8-7 penalty victory for their first Copa Del Rey trophy. Despite making the quarterfinals of the Cup Winners’ Cup the following season, Betis were relegated.
Their stay in the second division wasn’t long, though, and Betis qualified for the 1982 and 1984 UEFA Cups. In 1997, twenty years after winning the Copa Del Rey, Betis made the final once again. However, they lost 3-2 to Barcelona.
The 2004-05 season was a good one for Betis. They became the first Andalusian club to play in the UEFA Champions League and won their second Copa Del Rey. Since then, Betis have been relegated and won the second division twice. Their current spell in La Liga started in 2015-16 and it has been mostly positive. Betis have finished sixth or better in three of the last five La Liga seasons and won the 2022 Copa Del Rey.
La Liga odds for Real Betis are popular for betting on and they finished just outside of a Champions League place in 2021-22. However, betting advice suggests they are longshots to win the league, at +10000 odds.
