RC Lens Stats & History

Local students created Racing Club de Lens in 1906 and they adopted red and gold colors in 1924. In 1932 Lens moved to their current home, the Stade Bollaert-Delelis. The first major achievement in the RC Lens stats was reaching the first division in 1937.

Despite playing in the second division in 1947-48, Lens reached their first Coupe de France final. However, they lost 3-2 to LOSC Lille. Lens returned to the top tier shortly after and managed a third-place finish in 1955.

The club’s future was in doubt in 1962 as the coal mines were shut down. Regardless, Lens was one of the best offensive teams in Division 1 in 1963-1964, with 71 goals. Striker Ahmed Oudjani was the league’s top scorer, with 30 goals.

Lens were relegated in 1968 and the mine owners pulled out of the ownership group a year later. That meant Lens were an amateur team once again but the community pulled together to save the club. In 1972, as a second division club, Lens qualified for the semifinals of the Coupe de France. The following year, they gained promotion to the top tier once again.

Upon their return, Lens made their second Coupe de France final, in 1975. However, they lost 2-0 to Saint-Etienne. Later, they finished second in the league behind Nantes and played in the UEFA Cup for the first time.

RC Lens Team Records

Lens managed to play in European competitions a couple of times in the 80s but couldn’t manage to win a trophy. That changed in the 90s as they became one of the best teams in French soccer. The first major trophy registered in the RC Lens stats was the 1994 Coupe de la Ligue. Lens defeated Montpellier 3-2 in the final.

Their zenith was in 1998 as Lens won their first Ligue 1 title. A year later, they added another Coupe de la Ligue. In the 2000s Lens came close to another Ligue 1 title but were runners-up in 2001-02. They did, however, win the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2005 and 2007.

In the 2010s, Lens spent some time in Ligue 2 and their most recent spell in the top flight started in 2020-21. Betting advice recommends giving Lens a look, especially in favorable matchups. They’ve finished seventh in consecutive seasons and lost just three matches at home in 2021-22. The Ligue 1 odds price Lens at +15000 to win the title in 2022-23.
