Bryant Bulldogs Basketball History

The Bulldogs’ 2022 Northeast Conference title and subsequent trip to the NCAA Tournament was the culmination of a rapid ascent from Division II to the Big Dance in just about a decade.

After entering Division I play in 2008 as an independent and then going through three more probationary years in the NEC, Bryant first became eligible for postseason play in 2012-13. That coincided with the program’s first winning campaign since the move up to DI, as the Bulldogs went 19-12 (after going 2-28 in 2011-12) and played in the College Basketball Invitational.

Under head coach Tim O’Shea, Bryant had winning records in the conference over the next two seasons before it began to bottom out, losing 28 games again in 2017-18. Jarred Grasso took over for O’Shea and authored a dramatic rise back to the top of the NEC behind a brilliant offensive attack.

Setting the Stage

The Bryant Bulldogs team stats were off the chart in 2020-21, as the team ranked fourth in the country in scoring (83.8 points per game) and 14th in 3-point percentage (38.1). The squad opened an abbreviated schedule with a one-point loss at Syracuse before winning 15 of its next 19 games. It fell to Coastal Carolina in another College Basketball Invitational appearance, but the stage was set for the historic 2021-22 campaign.

Led by the nation’s leading scorer in Peter Kiss (25.2 points per game), last season saw the Bulldogs post 22 wins, including 16 of the last 17 in the regular season. Kiss, who also played at Quinnipiac and Rutgers in a meandering college career that spanned six seasons, scored 35 points to lead Bryant to its first Division I win of the season over Holy Cross.

That was the first of 10 30-point games for the New York City native, including six in a row at one point. Kiss scored 34 points in the Northeast Conference tournament finals and added 28 more in a loss to Wright State in one of the First Four games in Dayton, Ohio, ending the program’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament.

On March 1, 2022, Bryant announced a move to the America East for the 2022-23 season. While Kiss has moved on, the NCAAB odds should have the Bulldogs contending behind a host of quality transfers, including Doug Edert, who helped get St. Peter’s to the Elite Eight in a magical run last spring.
