Team History
The IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis) Jaguars are one of the newest NCAA Division I men’s basketball teams. The program itself has been around since the 1970s but only began competing in D-I since the late 90s. As such, IUPUI has only made one appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The team debuted in D-I with the Summit League (then called the Mid-Continent Conference). Under Ron Hunter, the team gradually improved and registered its first winning season during 2002-03. It also qualified for March Madness for the first time although it lost to Kentucky in the first round.
By the mid-2000s, the program remained competent and even finished with the best record in the Summit League in 2005-06. However, it failed to win the tournament and thus did not return to the NCAA Tournament. The likes of George Hill and Brandon Cole led the Jaguars’ team stats. The former became the first Jaguar to be drafted into the NBA in 2008.
But following Hunter’s departure in 2011, the program began a downward trend. The Jaguars have not recorded a winning season since (as of 2022-23). Several prospects like Alex Young and LeRoy Nobles performed admirably and led the IUPUI Jaguars’ team stats. But it was for naught.
Currently, the Jaguars are the runt of the Horizon League. Bettors can consistently find this team as an underdog on the NCAAB odds. With a cover rate of 46 percent on the spread since 2017, this program needs a spark to return to its “glory days”.
