UC Santa Barbara Gauchos Basketball History

The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos men’s basketball team was established in the season and has been in existence for over 100 years. UC Santa Barbara’s first encounter with postseason play occurred during the 1941 season when the school competed in the NAIA Tournament and made it to the National 3rd Place game, but lost to West Texas State to end the season.

While the program joined the Division I rank in 1964, the teams experienced many solid highs and unfathomable lows. Under Arthur Gallon’s leadership in the program’s inaugural season in the WCAC, the team registered a regular season record of 18-11, but the program struggled to build off that foundation.

The program had two periods of participation in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, with vast differences between the two. During the first half of their tenure, the school performed relatively well in the conference. However, during the second half since rejoining the conference, after a minor stint as an intercollegiate program, the program struggled to put together victories.

That all changed when coach Jason Primm orchestrated the program in a new direction. In the 1988 season, the Gauchos punched their first ticket to the NCAA Tournament. Even though the odds were not as high, the school managed to make its first appearance but lost to Maryland in the opening round.

The following season, the men’s basketball team missed out on the opportunity to compete in March Madness but received an invitation to participate in the NIT. The 1990 season would make history for UC Santa Barbara, and the school continues to strive to achieve the same level but has not had the chance to.

During the 1990 season, the program reached its highest seeding in the NCAA Tournament, earning the ninth seed as a member of the Big West Conference. With a regular season record of 21-9, including 13-5 in conference play, the Gauchos won a tightly contested game against Houston in the first round. They lost a close match to Michigan State in the second round, ending their excellent season.

Following brief appearances in the NIT during the 1992 and 1993 seasons, the school experienced a prolonged period without postseason participation for nearly a decade. The UC Santa Barbara team stats struggled to make any notable improvements during this span.

As Jerry Pimm’s coaching career came to an end, Bob Williams was appointed to fill the vacant position. Williams’ first couple of seasons as the leader of the program did not go as planned, but the biggest shift in the tide came during the 2002 season.

Despite putting together a solid regular season performance, the team lost a close game to Arizona in the first round. As a result, the program failed to advance to the next round of the NIT the following year.

The Gauchos experienced yet another postseason drought, as other programs in the Big West Conference gained more attention and recognition. Between 2008 and 2011, the men’s basketball team managed to re-establish its presence in the Big West, securing one NIT appearance and earning two selections to March Madness. However, the outcome was disappointing in the end, as the team lost in the first round.

It was able to participate in the CIT, CBI, and Vegas 16 tournaments despite yet another March Madness drought. In the Vegas 16 quarterfinals, the school finally beat Northern Illinois after decades of waiting. However, their season came to an end in the semifinals, when the team lost to Old Dominion.

Under the guidance of Coach Joe Pasternack, the program successfully earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the 2021 season, which was much needed after the previous tournament was canceled due to the global pandemic.

With an impressive regular season record of 22-5, including 15-3 in conference play, the team secured an invitation to the Big Dance. Regardless of their valiant effort, the school suffered a devastating one-point loss to Creighton.

Joe Pasternack will be leading the program for his sixth season. The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos men’s basketball team has solid NCAAB odds to win the Big West Conference and make an NCAA Tournament appearance as the team sits in first place in the conference as the regular season is winding down.
