Tszyu vs Mendoza Odds: Aussie Aussie Aussie!
WBO Super Welterweight Title Fight
Australia’s Tim Tszyu is all the rage with Tszyu vs Mendoza odds to win the WBO welterweight belt against Brian Mendoza.
Boasting an impressive unbeaten record, Tszyu won the interim title in June, and boxing odds have him at -700 to remain unbeaten.
Mendoza is 22-2 and a worthy challenger for the title.
Statement Win Approaching
Tszyu gets the benefit of having another fight in Australia, and that could play a big part of his success.
He has fought outside Australia just once when facing American Terrell Gausha in a close decision contest, so his team isn’t fully prepared to see him travel again.
He comes off a first-round knockout win over Carlos Ocampo, a 35-2 fighter at the time. It was a statement win for the Australian, who could go to another level against Mendoza.
The 28-year-old from a famous boxing family has looked good throughout his boxing schedule, including a TKO win over Tony Harrison in March, so his recent wins have been stunning.
He believes he’s the best in the division, according to the latest boxing news, and it’s tough to disagree.
“I want to earn it that way. Brian and I are both in that top one percent of fighters in the world,” Tszyu said.
“He’s a style I haven’t faced before, and I know he thrives on that underdog mentality. So, he, of course has my respect. But he’s in there with someone who’s a different breed, and it’s not going to end well for him. I promise to turn any remaining non-believers into believers. This is my time and my division now.”
If Tszyu is near his best, the -700 odds with Tszyu vs Mendoza odds look about right. He deserves to be the short favorite, given his unbeaten and impressive record.
Upset Value with Mendoza?
He might be the +450 underdog, but Mendoza can’t be overlooked as a promising American.
The 29-year-old lost to Larry Gomez and Jesus Ramos Jr in 2019 and 2021, but he has been much better since then.
He comes off a stellar seventh-round knockout win over Sebastian Fundora, which rifled Mendoza onto the world scene.
The upset performance earned him a chance at the title against Tszyu, and although Tszyu vs Mendoza odds aren’t giving him much chance, his knockout power can’t be understated.
He knew he would get this chance after being on the undercard of the Tszyu vs Gausha fight last year.
“I always had the belief that I would be here,” Mendoza said. “It was all just a matter of when everything would really fall into place, when the universe and all the stars really aligned.”
Beating Fundora as a +620 underdog means he’s a dangerous fighter. He wasn’t expected to have any chance on that occasion, so he’s not without a chance to score an upset win against Tszyu.
Tszyu to Unleash KO
Despite giving Mendoza plenty of credit, and rightfully so, we’re picking Tszyu to win by knockout.
The sportsbook has -165 for the Australian to win by KO, TKO or DQ, which is a fair price considering his record.
Mendoza has a big right hand, which was lethal in his most recent fight. However, Tszyu is the more professional fighter, and he’ll keep his distance before looking to land power punches later in the fight.
We don’t think the favorite will go out and attack Mendoza early, but he should work the body before working his way to the head.
