Uncover Exclusive Picks & Predictions From Our Experts.

Stuttgart Struggling Without Guirassy

Stuttgart have played two matches without star striker Serhou Guirassy and lost both. Guirassy, a Guinea international, is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations. In fact, Stuttgart is one of the hardest hit teams by AFCON and the AFC Asian Cup. Along with Guirassy, Silas, Woo-Yeong Jeong, and Hiroki Ito are all away on international duty. Over the weekend, Stuttgart fell 1-0 to VfL Bochum. In the first half, Bochum took advantage of an errant Angelo Stiller back pass and took the lead.

In the second half, Stuttgart had many good chances but didn’t have the cutting edge that Guirassy usually provides. The striker has scored 17 goals in the Bundesliga this season and is a big reason why Stuttgart is in third place in the Bundesliga table. Without him, Stuttgart scored just one goal in their last two games, and they also fell 3-1 to Borussia Monchengladbach a couple of weeks ago.

Playing as a lone striker, Deniz Undav hasn’t had many opportunities. He’s worked best in tandem with Guirassy this season, and the German has scored nine goals and provided three assists this season. Chris Fuhrich has been another crucial attacking piece for Stuttgart this campaign. Sebastian Hoeness will need them to step up this weekend. Along with the international tournament absences, Atakan Karazor is suspended for this one.

Leipzig Vulnerable on Set Pieces

RB Leipzig took on Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. Leipzig dominated the first half and had a bunch of excellent chances. Xavi Simons put RB ahead with a brilliant goal just seven minutes into the match, but the hosts couldn’t add to their lead. Leverkusen looked motivated in the second half and managed to get a goal back through Nathan Tella.

Shortly after, Lois Openda gave Leipzig another lead, but the hosts wouldn’t hold on to it for very long. Leipzig conceded two goals on corner kicks, with Xaver Schlager’s man scoring on both occasions. So, Leipzig fell 3-2, and they’ve lost their first two matches to kick off 2024. Concerningly, both of those losses were home losses, which were their first two of the Bundesliga season at Red Bull Arena.

Leipzig have had one of the best defenses in the league this season, but they tend to look vulnerable against the league’s top sides. Still, they defeated Stuttgart 5-1 earlier in the season, and the offensive potential is clearly there. Simons and Openda have been one of the league’s best one-two punches up to this point. Only Amadou Haidara and Willi Orban figure to miss this one as well.

Match Analysis & Odds

This is expected to be one of the closest matches of the weekend. Looking at the Stuttgart vs Leipzig match betting lines shows this one is a pick’em. Stuttgart pk comes in at -105 odds, while Leipzig pk displays -115. Leipzig hasn’t lost three Bundesliga matches in a row since December 2021, and they’re slight favorites for Saturday’s match.

Bettors can take Leipzig’s moneyline at +155 odds, and they’re 4-1-3 on the road this season. Meanwhile, Stuttgart are +165 underdogs and have an impressive 7-1-1 record at the MHPArena this season. Still, they’ll miss Guirassy in this one and will need secondary scoring options.

Stuttgart has also never defeated RB Leipzig but does have one of their strongest teams in recent memory this season. Three points would also keep either side in the top four for the time being. A draw is priced at +275 odds, and neither team would be too disappointed with sharing the points. Both over and under three goals show -110 odds, and we expect Leipzig to get on the scoresheet here at the very least.
