CFL Week 9 Odds Preview: Shaking up the Standings

Week 9 Could See Standings Shuffle Depending on the Outcomes

Bombers Favored Over Lions in a Pivotal Rematch

Three of the four CFL matchups this week are between teams that are beside each other in the standings. Either they force a tie or move ahead. Among these games is a rematch between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and BC Lions. Despite BC blowing out Winnipeg earlier, the Bombers are favored on the CFL Week 9 odds. A win from Winnipeg ties it with BC. Expect a playoff atmosphere in this week’s must-watch game.

CFL Week 8 Review: Top Defenses Keep Totals Under

Week 8 was a low-scoring one, just like Week 7. But this time, all four games went under the total, making it seven of the last eight games. In fact, three of the four best teams in the CFL shut down their opponents. Toronto, BC, and Montreal allowed just 31 points combined. The Lions held the Elks scoreless yet again.

BC’s defense has been nigh-unstoppable. Outside of the Toronto game, the Lions’ D have held its opponents to 19 points or fewer. Even Winnipeg managed just six points in their first meeting. Even without Vernon Adams, the Lions can stay atop the CFL standings if the defense stays this potent.

On the flip side, the Hamilton-Ottawa game was an offensive struggle. Bo Levi Mitchell threw five interceptions for Hamilton, while Ottawa had just 272 yards in net offense. Their total of 28 points, the lowest for Week 8, fell well below the 48.5 set by the oddsmakers.

BC Lions (6-1) vs Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-2)

Date/Time:
Location: IG Field, Winnipeg
Stream: CFL+, CBS Sports Network

Winnipeg gets home field advantage in this rematch. It is 5-1 against the spread (ATS) in its last six home games against the Lions. However, Winnipeg’s defense hasn’t been quite the same. Its two losses this season show a weakness in the secondary, while there have also been questionable play-calling. Nonetheless, the Bombers are 4.5-point favorites as it looks to solve BC’s top-rated defense.

Toronto Argonauts (6-0) vs Calgary Stampeders (2-5)

Date/Time:
Location: McMahon Stadium, Calgary

Toronto is the CFL Week 9 odds’ largest favorite at eight points. The defending champions stay unbeaten and its 45-point explosion against the Lions ages better by the week. This team can do it on both ends of the field and is just about to edge Winnipeg as the Grey Cup favorites. The 51-point total in this matchup is the highest of the week. However, the total has gone under in these teams’ last five meetings.

Montreal Alouettes (3-3) vs Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-4)

Date/Time:
Location: Tim Hortons Field, Hamilton

Hamilton looks to even the score with Montreal following the Alouettes’ 38-12 win earlier this season. The Tiger-Cats edged Ottawa despite Mitchell’s turnover-filled outing. This CFL team still has issues at quarterback although its defense has stood its ground. This combo has led to four of Hamilton’s last six games going under the total, which is at 45 here. Montreal is favored by a point in this meeting.

Ottawa Redblacks (3-4) vs Saskatchewan Roughriders (3-4)

Date/Time:
Location: Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, Montreal

The final game in this week’s CFL schedule is a battle between two 3-4 teams. As such, one point separates them on the betting lines – in favor of Ottawa, the visitors. The Redblacks came back to Earth against Hamilton after two overtime wins. Now, the CFL Week 9 odds show the total is at the lowest at 44 points with Ottawa. But the total has gone over in four of Saskatchewan’s last five home games.
