Group of Death Produces Another Excellent Matchup

BVB vs Rossoneri at Signal Iduna Park

After one match, Borussia Dortmund are at the bottom of Champions League Group F, which is this UCL season’s group of death. Dortmund’s opponents on Tuesday, AC Milan, played to a scoreless draw vs Newcastle at the San Siro a couple of weeks back. So, both sides are looking for their first group stage win, which’d be an important one. We’ll look closer at this UCL Dortmund vs Milan head-to-head matchup, including the odds and latest team news.

BVB Borussia Dortmund vs AC Milan MIL

Day/Time:
Location: Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund, Germany

Head-to-Head

AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund haven’t met for over 20 years. Back in 2002-03, when the Champions League format was different, they split their meetings in the second group stage. AC Milan advanced as group winners, and Dortmund finished in third place. The all-time Dortmund vs Milan head-to-head record is three wins for AC Milan, two for Dortmund, and a draw.

Borussia Dortmund on 22-Match Home Unbeaten Run

Since losing their Champions League opener 2-0 at Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund have won their last two matches in the Bundesliga. Over the weekend, they picked up a 3-1 win and ended Hoffenheim’s four-match winning streak. Niclas Fullkrug scored the opening goal, his first for Borussia Dortmund since joining over the Summer. Marco Reus got on the scoresheet for a third straight league match.

Julian Ryerson added the third on an incredible solo run from left back, which he finished off by nutmegging the keeper. Dortmund are an unbeaten 4-2-0 in the Bundesliga, which puts them in fourth place and level on points with Bayern Munich. Although they’ve been in good form in the Bundesliga, they’re currently in last place in the UCL standings. They’ll undoubtedly be thinking about grabbing all three points in this Dortmund vs Milan head-to-head matchup at the Signal Iduna Park. Incredibly, Dortmund haven’t lost a home match in any of the last 13 months.

In last season’s UCL group stage, Dortmund went 1-2-0 at home with a win over FC Copenhagen and draws vs Sevilla and Manchester City. They’ll put their 22-game unbeaten streak on the line at home on Wednesday and are favorites to extend it. They’re missing Thomas Meunier and Marcel Sabitzer but have more than enough firepower to get the job done.

AC Milan Improving on Defense

After Saturday’s 2-0 win over Lazio, AC Milan have conceded just one goal in their last four matches, in all competitions. The Rossoneri are level on points at the top of the Serie A table with rivals Inter Milan but are behind on both head-to-head and goal difference as things stand. Still, Milan’s win over the weekend was impressive, and Rafael Leao was their standout performer.

With his runs down the left wing, Leao caused problems all day for the Biancocelesti defense. The Portuguese international set up both AC Milan goals and now has three goals and three assists on the season. AC Milan are one of the more interesting soccer picks today, given how many clean sheets they’ve been keeping lately.

The Rossoneri also shut out Newcastle in their Champions League opener but didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet themselves. So, AC Milan head into Wednesday’s match with one point and ambitions of getting their first win. Christian Pulisic has been a revelation for Milan since joining, and he got on the scoresheet on Saturday, along with Noah Okafor.

Match Analysis & Odds

AC Milan will be missing Ismael Bennacer, Pierre Kalulu and Rade Krunic for this match, but they figure to be competitive even without them. In one of the most exciting Champions League matches today, Borussia Dortmund are +145 home favorites. AC Milan aren’t too far behind, at +190 odds. However, the Rossoneri won just one of their six road Champions League matches last season, with a 1-3-2 record.

Bettors can find a draw at +250 odds, but both UCL teams will be thinking about all three points heading into this one. Edin Terzic hasn’t seemed to find his best attacking lineup, as all of Donyell Malen, Karim Adeyemi, Niclas Fullkrug and Sebastien Haller have started at striker this season. With Fullkrug opening up his BVB account on Saturday, perhaps he’ll get another start here.

For Stefano Pioli, the choice will be quite easy, as punters should expect a Milan front three of Christian Pulisic, Olivier Giroud and Rafael Leao. Dortmund pk, -0.5, sits at even odds here, while Milan pk, +0.5 shows -120. Neither team has gotten on the scoresheet in the UCL yet, but over 2.5 goals come in at -120 odds.
