Gunners Look to Complete Double Over Sevilla

Points Crucial for Sevilla

Heading into the fourth Champions League Matchday, Sevilla have earned just two points. When Los Nervionenses head to London on Wednesday to face Arsenal, they’ll be looking to pick up points. Arsenal are going for the double over Sevilla and should be motivated following a controversial defeat to Newcastle on Saturday. If the Gunners win and Lens defeat PSV, Arsenal will clinch a knockout stage berth with two games to spare. Let’s check out the odds in our Arsenal vs Sevilla betting match preview.

Head-to-Head:

In October, Arsenal went on the road to Sevilla and the Gunners came away with a 2-1 win. Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus scored the Gunners’ goals and Nemanja Gudelj scored on a header for Sevilla. Los Nervionenses pushed for a late equalizer but the Gunners held on. For that Arsenal vs Sevilla betting match, the Gunners were -120 favorites. These teams also met in the 2007 UEFA Champions League group stage and split their meetings.

Arsenal Furious After Controversial Loss

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was furious following Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle. In the second half, VAR failed to overturn a Newcastle goal that Arteta felt had multiple reasons to not stand. The VAR check looked at an out of bounds, foul, and offside all on the same play and the officials apparently didn’t see any clear and obvious errors. Arsenal even made a statement about the standard of officiating following the match.

All of this is to say that the Gunners should be highly motivated come Wednesday when they take on Sevilla in the Champions League. The UCL betting odds price Arsenal as -335 favorites for this one despite a number of injuries. All of Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey, Emile Smith Rowe, Gabriel Jesus, and Jurrien Timber missed the match at Newcastle. The latter four players all figure to miss this one as well while it’s unclear whether Odegaard, Arsenal’s captain, will suit up for this one.

Jesus scored in Arsenal’s first three Champions League matches and his absence is a big loss. His replacement, Eddie Nketiah, scored a hat trick vs. Sheffield United but has drawn a blank in his last two appearances. Arsenal have lost their last two games heading into Wednesday’s match. The Gunners crashed out of the EFL Cup early by losing to West Ham 3-1 last Wednesday and fell to Newcastle over the weekend. Arsenal will need Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli to step up here.

Sevilla’s Struggles Continue

Over the weekend, Sevilla went on the road to Galicia to take on Celta Vigo. Sevilla fell behind in the first half as Celta’s Carl Starfelt headed home. Celta Vigo’s Renato Tapia picked up a second yellow card midway through the second half and the hosts were reduced to ten men. Youssef En-Nesyri came on as a sub for Sevilla and equalized the score. The ref awarded a late penalty as Jesus Navas dragged down a Celta player in the box.

Controversially, the referee overturned the penalty with the use of VAR, and the match finished level. The Sevilla standings are certainly not pretty at the moment. With a 2-5-4 record, Sevilla are currently in 15th place in La Liga and have drawn their last four league games. They have only lost one match under Diego Alonso but the Uruguayan coach is still going for his first La Liga and UCL wins.

Last week, Sevilla did win their first-round matchup in the Copa del Rey 3-0 but faced fourth-tier club Quintanar. Los Nervionenses are 0-2-1 in the Champions League so far, which means they’ve drawn seven of their 15 competitive matches this season. For Wednesday’s match, defender Sergio Ramos is dealing with a muscle injury and Marcao has missed the last few weeks.

Match Analysis & Odds

Arsenal is one of the top soccer betting picks to win the UEFA Champions League, at +800 odds. Winning this match will mean they have a great shot to finish first in the group. They’re yet to lose at the Emirates Stadium this season and still have a lot of quality even with some key players out. The Gunners are 1.5-goal favorites for this match but Sevilla does have what it takes to keep this one competitive.

Bettors can take both Arsenal -1.5 and Sevilla +1.5 at -110 odds here. In this Arsenal vs Sevilla betting match, the visitors are +850 moneyline underdogs which corresponds to just a 10.5 percent implied chance of victory. Sevilla may feel disrespected by those odds in what is their fourth road match in a row, in all competitions.

They’re an unbeaten 1-2-0 in the previous three and another Sevilla draw shows +400 odds here. Under 3.5 goals display -160 odds and it’s a reasonably safe bet. Arsenal have lacked a fair bit of creativity in recent weeks and that could continue if Martin Ødegaard can’t play. Sevilla will want this one to turn more into a dogfight than a football match and a low-scoring one at that.
