⚽ Netherlands vs Ecuador: Game Recap⚽

Results: Netherlands 1 – 1 Ecuador

The Netherlands and Ecuador played out a 1-1 draw on Friday.

Cody Gakpo seemed to have put the Netherlands on their way to a second win in the competition, after he struck past Ecuadorian keeper Hernan Galindez after just five minutes. Gakpo’s strike was his second goal in two games.

Pervis Estupinan then had a goal ruled out for offside shortly before the break, but another in-form forward intervened on his own. Enner Valencia tapped home after Andries Noppert parried a shot into his path after 49 minutes. While the Dutch players appealed for another offside, Valencia was onside, and the goal stood.

After 85+ minutes on the back foot, it seems the Netherlands may be just good enough to win a below-average group, but have they been good enough to do anything more? They seemed unsettled in the midfield and produced nothing after Gakpo’s strike.

Andries Noppert later hit the bar for Ecuador, but the game finished level. In the end, Valencia went off injured and had to be carried off on a stretcher. There is no news yet on the severity of his injury, but the World Cup leading goal scorer will hope to help lead his team to the Round of 16.

Did We Get It Right?

Below you will find all the predictions we made before the matchup, on November 22, 2022.

Solid Starts for Ecuador and The Netherlands

After one match, the Netherlands and Ecuador are level on three points in FIFA World Cup Group A. They’re also level on goal difference, as both teams won their opening matches 2-0. When they meet on Friday, both sides will undoubtedly be motivated to get all three points and go top of the group. It’ll be difficult for Ecuador to stop a star studded Netherlands team but La Tri’s defense has been excellent lately. Let’s take a look at the major Netherlands vs. Ecuador odds ahead of the match.

Head-to-Head:

All Meetings:Teams
March 2014: Netherlands 1-1 Ecuador
March 2006:Netherlands 1-0 Ecuador

The Netherlands and Ecuador have only met on two previous occasions, both in friendlies. In the lead up to the 2014 World Cup, Netherlands and Ecuador drew 1-1. The Oranje got their only win vs. Ecuador back in 2006. This will be the first time to bet on the Netherlands vs Ecuador odds in the World Cup.

Netherlands: Grinding Out a Result

Standings: 1-0, (T-1st Group A)
Previous Match: W, 2-0 vs. Senegal
Upcoming Match: Nov. 29 vs. Qatar

It took 84 minutes for a Netherlands breakthrough in their opening match vs. Senegal. Despite not producing a threat for much of the second half, sensation Cody Gakpo looped a header over Senegal keeper Edouard Mendy to go up 1-0. Davy Klaassen finished off a rebound in stoppage time for good measure. The Netherlands’ Andries Noppert also had an excellent World Cup debut in what was also the 6’8” goalkeeper’s national team debut. Perhaps it’s a mark of a great team that they can still win without playing anywhere close to their best.

Following their first match win, the Netherlands sit at +1100 odds to win the World Cup trophy. The vast majority of teams who win their first match advance out of the group stage and that’s certainly what’s expected of the Oranje. A win vs. Ecuador could even seal a knockout stage berth depending on the result of Qatar vs. Senegal.

It’ll be interesting to see if Louis van Gaal shakes up his forward line. Steven Bergwijn and Vincent Janssen worked hard but failed to provide much of a threat up top. Van Gaal has Memphis Depay at his disposal and he had an energetic cameo as a sub.

Ecuador: Dream Start for La Tri

Standings: 1-0 (T-1st Group A)
Previous Match: W, 2-0 vs. Qatar
Upcoming Match: Nov. 29 vs. Senegal

Enner Valencia easily could have had a hat trick in the opening match of the World Cup. Ecuador’s all-time leading scorer had a third minute header vs. Qatar disallowed for a marginal offsides call but later added two goals that actually counted. The 2-0 win was a dream start for an Ecuador side making their first World Cup appearance since 2014.

The Netherlands vs Ecuador odds may price Ecuador as underdogs but they’ll certainly be confident after Sunday. Ecuador didn’t concede a single shot on target vs. Qatar and haven’t conceded a goal since March. They’ve kept shutouts in seven consecutive games, including vs. other World Cup teams Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Japan.

The concern for Ecuador heading into the tournament was their goal scoring, or lack of. However, Valencia was a huge threat vs. Qatar and seems to come through on big occasions. There’s certainly a difference between facing Qatar’s defense and Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt, though.
