Rocket Mortgage Classic 2023 Leaderboard: Hadwin, Davis Among Golfers to Watch

Davis looking to Follow Up 2021 Championship at Detroit Golf Club

The Rocket Mortgage Classic is set to tee off Thursday. Scores are typically low at Detroit Golf Club, making it a favorite stop on the PGA Tour. As such, this year’s tournament boasts a strong field, with more than a dozen of the world’s top 50 golfers expected to compete for a share of the $8.8 million prize pool.

Defending champion Tony Finau is the +1200 betting favorite, along with Collin Morikawa. But they’re far from the only two golfers to keep an eye on. Here are some lesser-known figures who could surprise and wind up cracking the Rocket Mortgage Classic 2023 leaderboard.

Location: Detroit Golf Club

LONGSHOT OUTRIGHT WINNERS

Adam Hadwin (+6000)

The Canadian product is still looking for his first win of 2023, but he’s had four top-10 paydays, including a runner-up finish at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. More notably, he’s fared well at this golf tournament before, having placed fourth in 2020.

Thomas Detry (+9000)

Detry has missed the cut in three of his last nine tournaments, including last week at the Travelers Championship. However, he’s capable of putting together big performances, as evidenced by his eight top-25 finishes this year. His best showing came last October in Bermuda, where he shot an 18-under 266 to place second.

Chez Reavie (+10000)

Reavie is coming off a strong showing at TPC River Highlands, where he shot a 19-under 261 to finish tied for fourth behind Keegan Bradley, Zac Blair, and Brian Harman. Though the course played very favorably — too much so, according to Rory McIlroy — Reavie’s performance shouldn’t be diminished. If you’re looking to ride the hot hand, Reavie offers strong value to finish atop the Rocket Mortgage Classic 2023 leaderboard.

TOP 20 FINISH

Justin Thomas (+110)

Thomas is an outlier here in that he’s a big name. The No. 17 golf player in the world, he’s priced at +1600 to win outright. That said, the value here’s too good to ignore. Thomas has six top-20 finishes this year. He also tied for 21st at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and tied for 25th three other times. The point is, Thomas has played his way into the mix far more often than not. He’s coming off a tie for ninth at the Travelers Championship. There’s always some variability risk, but if Thomas plays to his capabilities, he’s a solid bet at plus money.

TOP 30 FINISH

Cameron Davis (+105)

Sure, Davis is in a bit of a rut right now. Since placing fourth at the PGA Championship, he’s failed to make the cut in three of the last four tournaments. That said, the 28-year-old Australian native should be plenty comfortable this week in Detroit. After all, he won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2021, outlasting Joaquin Niemann and Troy Merritt in a playoff. Davis — who shot 18-under — could be in just the right place to get back on track. If you’re feeling bold, Davis is priced at +3000 to place atop the Rocket Mortgage Classic 2023 leaderboard.

TOP 40 FINISH

Callum Tarren (+140)

Similar to Davis, Tarren is returning to the scene of past success. He finished in a tie for 20th at Detroit Golf Club last year, carding a 13-under. The 32-year-old Englishman played fairly well at the Travelers Championship and seems to have overcome his struggles after missing nine consecutive cuts between February and April. Tarren has had three top-25 finishes, including a runner-up showing at the RSM Classic last November. Given Tarren’s success off the tee, there’s a lot to like here at plus odds.
