2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Finau, Morikawa Favorites

Finau shot tournament record 26-under to win in 2022

On the heels of the Travelers Championship, the PGA Tour heads to Detroit for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Despite its non-elevated status, the tournament boasts an impressive field, with 14 of the top 50 players in the World Golf Rankings. Joining defending champion Tony Finau are world No. 9 Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, Rickie Fowler, and Justin Thomas, among others.

The fifth-annual PGA event will take place at Detroit Golf Club beginning Thursday.

Let’s look at the top odds for the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

THE FAVORITES

Tony Finau (+1200)

Since winning in Mexico in April, Finau has finished outside the top 20 in five straight tournaments. However, if the past is any indication, Finau could be primed for a bounce-back performance.Finau is the defending champion of this event, having carded a tournament-record 26-under 262.

Collin Morikawa (+1200)

Morikawa missed the cut at the Travelers Championship this past weekend. Furthermore, he hasn’t had a top-10 payday since the Masters. Still, with five career wins on the PGA Tour, the 26-year-old Morikawa is one of the most accomplished names in the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Is his back healthy?

Ricky Fowler (+1400)

Fowler continues to trend in the right direction. He carded a third-round 60 at the Travelers and finished in a tie for 13th, shooting a 16-under 264. That came on the heels of three-consecutive top-10 finishes, including a stirring performance at the U.S. Open.

Justin Thomas (+1400)

Thomas is an extremely streaky player, but bettors saw the positive side of his game at TPC River Highlands. He shot 17-under par to finish in a tie for ninth, rebounding after missing back-to-back cuts. Thomas is still searching for his first win of the PGA season, but with three top-10 paydays, the potential’s there. This will be his first appearance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Max Homa (+1800)

Homa already has two victories this year and is the highest-ranked player in the field. Yet, he’s missed the cut in four of his last seven tournaments. If he’s able to recapture his form at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, he’ll be in the mix come Sunday.

THE CONTENDERS

Hideki Matsuyama (+2000)

Detroit Golf Club’s friendly fairways should favor Matsuyama. His game’s a bit erratic, but this is a golf course that allows some margin for error. Matsuyama hasn’t had a top-10 payday since the Players Championship in March.

Sungjae Im (+2000)

Im is in a bit of a rut. He’s missed three of the last five cuts since an eighth-place finish at the Wells Fargo Championship in May. He owns seven top-10 finishes this year but has yet to card a victory.

Tom Kim (+2200)

Kim has been knocking on the door of another victory. Since winning the Shriner’s Children’s Open in October, Kim’s had four top-10 finishes, including the U.S. Open.

THE LONGSHOTS

Keegan Bradley (+3000)

Bradley shot a tournament-record 23-under to win the Travelers, outlasting bigger names like Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay. Can he make it two straight victories?

Cameron Davis (+3500)

Davis has fond memories of this tournament. The Australian native won it in 2021, edging Troy Merritt and Joaquin Niemann in a three-way playoff. It remains his only victory on the PGA Tour.

Brian Harman (+4000)

Harman carded a 64 on Sunday to finish in a tie with Zac Blair for second at the Travelers. He’ll be in good shape if he’s able to ride that momentum into this week.
