RMA Real Madrid vs. Real Sociedad RSO

Location: Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid, Spain Date & Time: Sunday, September 17th, 3:00 p.m. ET

Head-to-Head:

Last season, Real Madrid couldn’t get the better of Real Sociedad. Sociedad got some of the more impressive La Liga results vs. Real Madrid last season. The Txuri-Urdin picked up a 2-0 win at home and managed a scoreless draw at the Santiago Bernabeu. The season before, Loz Blancos completed the double over Sociedad, with 4-1 and 2-0 wins. Real Madrid have lost just one of the last seven meetings, in all competitions.

Real Win First Match Without Vinicius Junior

Real Madrid lost star winger Vinicius Junior to a hamstring injury in a late August match vs. Celta Vigo. Their talisman, who is one of the best La Liga players, is expected to be out through the Madrid Derby vs. Atletico Madrid on September 24th. In their first match without him, vs. Getafe, Joselu managed to make his first start for Los Blancos. Real fell behind 1-0 to their local rivals at home within the first 15 minutes.

In his first Real Madrid start, Joselu managed to equalize on a scramble in the box. Real Madrid had the better chances in the match but they couldn’t manage to take the lead until deep into stoppage time. Jude Bellingham was in the right place in the right time and scored a rebound to win the match. Bellingham has now scored in his first four Real Madrid matches and leads La Liga, with five goals. Los Blancos paid a pretty penny to Borussia Dortmund to bring him to Madrid, but he’s lived up to the hype so far.

He should play a key role in Sunday’s match. Currently, the Real Madrid vs Real Sociedad odds list the hosts as one-goal favorites. Along with Vinicius Junior, Dani Ceballos, Eder Miltao, Thibaut Courtois and Arda Guler are still out. After Andriy Lunin replaced the injured Courtois and started the first couple of matches in goal, Kepa Arrizabalaga has played Real’s last two.

Sociedad Get First Win of Season

Real Sociedad blew away Granada just before the international break in a match that was not as close as the scoreline suggests. Sociedad won 5-3 that day but were up 5-1 in the 76th minute. Takefusa Kubo, who was under contract at Real Madrid from 2019 to 2022, was excellent in the match.

The Japan international scored Sociedad’s first two goals and forced an own goal on a second-half pass. He’s scored three goals and provided an assist so far this season. Real Sociedad’s first three La Liga scores of the season were somewhat disappointing. They drew three straight matches to open up the season and blew leads in two of them.

Sociedad finished in fourth place last season and they have what it takes to contend for a Champions League place once again. Defender Robin Le Normand has become a starter for the Spain national team. Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi were also called up for Spain’s recent Euro qualifiers.
