Marseille Fall in Ligue 1 For First Time Under Gasset

Marseille lost a Ligue 1 match for the first time under new head coach Jean-Louis Gasset a couple of weekends ago. OM went on the road to Rennes and had some good chances but only managed one shot on target. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit the post on a free kick and Marseille narrowly missed the rebound but they failed to score on the night. Instead, Rennes won 2-0 and caught up to Marseille on points. Marseille enters the weekend in seventh place in the Ligue 1 table.

Their loss at Rennes broke a three game league winning streak and OM are now four points behind fourth-placed Lille. After scoring 18 goals in their first five matches under Gasset, in all competitions, Marseille have scored just one in their last two. They fell 3-1 in the Europa League at Villarreal on March 14th but still advanced to the Quarter-Final by a 5-3 scoreline, on aggregate.

Aubameyang has been key for Marseille this season, with 11 Ligue 1 goals and a joint-league leading seven assists. The Gabon international has scored eight goals in his last seven matches for Marseille overall. Meanwhile, no other OM player has more than three Ligue 1 goals. Samuel Gigot, Amir Murillo, and Valentin Rongier could be among those out for Sunday’s match.

Mbappe Registers Hat Trick for PSG

Paris Saint-Germain enter this weekend’s Le Classique in solid form. PSG are unbeaten in the last 24 matches overall and haven’t lost in Ligue 1 since September. Before the international break, PSG ran riot vs. Montpellier. Kylian Mbappe scored a hat trick and Vitinha added a goal and two assists in the 6-2 drubbing. It was Mbappe’s ninth career Ligue 1 hat trick and he’s been superb again this season.

Mbappe has only failed to score five times in his last 18 matches, in all competitions. He’s first on the list of Ligue 1 top scorers, with 24 goals in 24 appearances. This is a crucial stretch for PSG, who will need him at his best. After this match, they face Rennes next Wednesday in the Coupe de France Semifinal. The week after, PSG host Barcelona in the Champions League Quarterfinal.

While PSG are clearly the more talented team on paper in this match vs. Marseille, they do have a few injuries which could complicate matters. Defenders Marquinhos, Milan Skriniar and Presnel Kimpembe are all out injured. Meanwhile, forwards Marco Asensio and Bradley Barcola, who have six Ligue 1 goals between them, are also out with hamstring injuries.

Marseille vs PSG Analysis & Odds

PSG’s Mbappe commands so much attention from opposing defenses that he constantly opens up the pitch for his teammates. After failing to score during the international break, Mbappe should also be motivated to get on the scoresheet here. While Aubameyang isn’t Mbappe, he’s still a genuine attacking threat that could take advantage of a shorthanded PSG backline.

Bettors can expect a fiery match here. Le Classique usually brings a bunch of yellow cards and the occasional red. For Sunday’s match, PSG are +110 road favorites and they’ve had no problems winning at the Velodrome as of late. Our Marseille vs PSG preview notes OM are still unbeaten at home in the 2023-24 season, which makes this an intriguing clash.

A draw (+300) would preserve PSG’s long unbeaten streak and Marseille’s unblemished home run. Punters can also consider Marseille pk, +0.5 at -115 odds, and PSG pk, -0.5 at the same price. Under three goals are priced at -120 odds here but there’s certainly the potential for a few goals. Marseille will go all out here to try to remain in the race for the Champions League. OM have a shot to end PSG’s unbeaten streak but the Parisians have looked quite strong lately.
