deGrom Helped Rangers Playoff Hopes From The Sidelines
Texas Looking to Lock Up Posteason, First Time Since 2016
Winning just twice in 2023 isn’t exactly what the Texas Rangers anticipated Jacob deGrom’s stats to reflect, but his signing was a signal that the club was done handing the Houston Astros the American League West title. Texas leads the American League East by 2.5 games over their division nemesis with 47 games left.
Let’s take a look at the Rangers’ 2023 betting stats and how it compares to the previous season’s results and how the lack of huge stats from deGrom hasn’t matter one bit.
Bettors Making Up From Rangers History
At the conclusion of last season, a 94-loss year for the Texas Rangers, bettors were once again left wondering where all their money went. Over the last three MLB seasons, Texas has a combined record of 150-234 (-4510 units). In that span, only the Washington Nationals (-4543 units) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (-4789 units) have worse numbers against the moneyline.
General Manager Chris Young and Owner Ray Davis decided it was time to go all-in singing pitcher Jacob deGrom last December to anchor their pitching staff after injury problems plagued his 9-year career with the New York Mets.
Unfortunately, injuries followed the 35-year-old pitcher to Arlington where he would appear in just six games before it was finally revealed that the 4-time all-star would need Tommy John surgery. Jacob DeGrom’s 2023 stats are a disappointment but with the addition of Nathan Eovaldi, Corey Seager, Jordan Montgomery, and now Max Scherzer, it was clear that the culture and expectations have changed in the Lone Star State.
This season, Ranger bettors are up 515 units in what could be their first plus-money season since 2019 (+840 units). Texas can thank deGrom for helping out on signing Scherzer at the deadline after the veteran talked with deGrom about the organization.
The former Stetson star won’t help the Rangers MLB playoff odds or among the MLB MVP odds leaders as Texas anticipated but his discussion with Scherzer helped the team find their ace for the stretch run. Let’s take a look at the Ranges MLB 2023 stats as we head toward September.
As Underdogs, The Rangers Are Reliable Wager
It’s easy to win when you’re the favorite, but great teams win when they’re not projected to win. This season the Texas Rangers are 18-17 when in an underdog role, making bettors 398 units. Texas has been incredible at home where they’ve produced a 40-20 mark with 702 units of profit.
That mark is the best in baseball with the Baltimore Orioles a distant second with 405 units of profit (36-23). It’s a massive turnaround after costing the betting public 1479 units last season when at home. Against teams playing .500 ball or better, Texas is 34-26 (+428 units).
That represents another incredible turnaround after failing to record a winning record against the better teams in Major League Baseball since 2017 (145-247, -3663 units). Just five other teams were worse against teams over .500 in that span. Jacob deGrom’s 2023 stats haven’t helped much but there is no doubt the Texas Rangers have turned the corner on the field and in the sportsbooks.
