Domingo German Stats: Yankees Pitcher Has Been Inconsistent

German Has Just One Winning Season in Career

Domingo German has been one of the more frustrating pitchers in Major League Baseball the past few seasons. When he’s on, he can be as good as anybody in the game. When he’s off, it looks as though he should be on the next bus back to the minor leagues. The Domingo German stats show the Yankees allow 3.08 runs in wins with him on the hill. New York allows 5.59 runs in losses with him starting.

German’s career starts are a little better than average. He’s 31-26 with a 4.40 ERA. It’s interesting to note that he’s had just one winning season with the Yankees. His record has been below .500 in the other four years. The Yankees have gone 51-34 in his career starts.

German was signed as a free agent by the Florida Marlins in 2009 and was traded to the Yankees in 2014. He missed all of the 2015 season after having Tommy John surgery. German played in the minors in 2016, starting 10 games and throwing well.

He was brought up to the majors in 2017, appearing in seven games with an 0-1 record and an ERA of 3.14. He made his first MLB start in 2018 against Cleveland on May 6. German pitched six hitless innings and fanned nine, but was taken out of the game due to his pitch count. He became the first MLB player to allow no hits and strike out at least nine hitters in his first start. But the rest of the season didn’t go well for German, who finished with a 2-6 record and an ERA of 5.57.

2019: A Career Season on the Field, Bad News Off It

The Domino German stats in 2019 are impressive by any standards. He was among the MLB stat leaders with 18 wins, which tied him for fourth in baseball. German made just 24 starts. Every other pitcher who won as many or more games as German had at least 33 starts. German’s 18-4 record gave him a winning percentage of .818, which was the best among qualified pitchers. He was a baseball betting player’s dream that season, with the Yankees going 19-5 in his starts and running off six- and eight-game winning streaks.

But German was suspended on Sept. 25 for domestic abuse allegations and his season came to an end. However, he was handed an 81-game suspension, which consisted of 19 games in 2019 and 63 games in 2020. With COVID-19 reducing the 2020 season to 60 games, he missed the entire year.

German started 18 games in 2021 but was just 4-5 with a 4.58 ERA. New York was 10-8 in the games he started.

German began 2022 on the disabled list and didn’t make his first appearance until July. Despite a career-best 3.61 ERA, the Domingo German stats show just a 2-5 record. The Yankees were 6-8 in the games he started, scoring just 3.93 runs per game.

On June 28, 2023, German pitched the 24th perfect game in MLB history against the Oakland A’s. He struck out nine in recording his first Major League shutout.
